I had to stare at this piece for a good ten minutes just struggling with the uncertainty as to whether this was a photo or an immensely good painting. Finally decided a painting from a few little tidbits, but they do not make this any less than a phenomenal piece of work. I am just blown away with the high attention to detail and just sheer feel of everything- as if I could just stumble right across this very moment were I to travel far enough down some beach somewhere. Fantastic. :3

Is he catching fish for her? He doesn't look like he'd have much use for them himself...

This is incredibly well done. The colours, the framing, the postures, the expressions, the detailing... I can feel the stones underfoot, and how cold the poor woman is. This deserves a DD, and I wish I knew how to nominate it for one

That stonework rocks.

I've gotta say man, your artwork is all incredible, because not only are they fantastically well done and beautiful to look at, but the minimalist yet still vibrant(Damn, how do you do it!) use of colors, and all you can see when you zoom in, make them downright educational!

The rocks are really well done but to me the thing that sells this is her foreground position.
The diagonal from her eyes to his. Always a pleasure to see your new work.

Heh, I'm guessing that comment means you got a bit fed up with painting rocks on this one... don't blame you. The work definitely paid off though, I love this.

It's more so that after I had mentally said "Good the rocks are done, I can focus on the rest of the picture" I kept having to go back and do more rocks after I moved/transformed the characters and background. not fun.

Corvalian In reply to TheMichaelMacRae [2015-12-20 08:11:09 +0000 UTC]

That's one of those things where I would be like "I'm going to try and make a "rock brush," or "I'm going to find a good rock texture/picture online." But then again, it wouldn't necessarily fit, or look as good. Definitely not fun, but I think it created an important effect.

The rocks make the girl seem more like she's in a desperate situation. She's not just having a fun time at the beach when this creepy character shows up. She trecked across uncomfortable ground (with somewhat overcast skies/lighting) without shoes to... bathe or fish maybe? Then, surprise, this other character shows up with a fish, what happens next? It's up to the viewer to think about. Is he helpful despite his looks? Will he provide her with fish, or are they both surprised (and he's going to attack her to protect the fish he caught)? It's amazing.

In other words, it was definitely worth it to do rocks over (possibly easier?) sand. Do you mind if I ask how long this piece took you?

TheMichaelMacRae In reply to Corvalian [2015-12-20 09:14:25 +0000 UTC]

I did it over two weeks. The rocks took a solid couple days of ignoring the rest of the picture
