Description For Mermay I have decided to redesign the live action Little Mermaid characters as someone who doesn't hate myself in an underpaid job for a soul-sucking corporation. This is my take on Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

As an artist, it appalls me how bad the character designs in these Disney remakes are. Disney has given us some of the most iconic and recognizable characters in the past, so it’s depressing to see their standards sliding. It's obvious that they no longer have any desire to make art. They also have no idea what elements they need to keep in these remakes and what needs to go. The most obvious thing that does not work in "live action" (using that term very loosely) is the talking animal sidekicks. Photorealistic talking animals are weird and offputting. I know it. You know it. Our silence is part of this great crime. The obvious solution in a movie about a mermaid is to just make the talking animals merpeople. There's a lot of scope for creativity in what sea creatures you can base them on. Merpeople with crab-like features, for example, do exist in Greek mythology, and there's already an octopus merwitch, so why not. Obviously, this would mean cutting out the "Les Poisson" sequence, but it's a small price to pay for the greater good. You can always add an Oscar bait original song to take its place.
