Description
Our journey begins with the introduction of what is arguably one of Prey's strongest attributes: the main character.More than just an in-game avatar for the player to control, Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi is a fully-fledged and fully-voiced player character that, over the course of the game's story, undergoes a genuine transformation in beliefs and values. Even as a Cherokee garage mechanic from the Sooner State , Tommy is more relatable as a person than the likes of Gordon Freeman and Duke Nukem , and yet the motivation and actions of our Cherokee hero does not break with the immersion of Prey's constant first-person perspective.
The portrayal of Native Americans in fiction still remains a contentious and controversial topic. Tommy is voiced by Michael Greyeyes , an accomplished Canadian actor of Plains Cree heritage, who offered considerable praise to the in-game depiction of his character:
I was impressed with the way [3D Realms] conceived of and wrote Tommy... Hollywood typically relegates our different indigenous cultures either into a single pan-Indian construct of some type — radical AIM protester type; slick, corporate, anglicized casino businessman type; etcetera — or, most commonly, as a historical figure, typically from a Plains culture. In fact, the overwhelming majority of roles written for native actors are in the Western genre. There are few opportunities for us to appear outside that paradigm, and when we do it is often equally narrow in focus... The writers [at 3D Realms] were always open to my comments — which I freely offered — and took my notes seriously, in nearly all instances changing dialogue or thematic content.----

I agree. My initial gripe with Prey 2 before it was cancelled was that despite continuing the original story, Tommy and his Cherokee heritage were no longer part of the game's focus. With Killian Samuels, there wasn't going to be any spirit walking, death walking, or Land of the Ancients to revisit or expand upon, which, more than its aliens, were elements that made the original game special.
Even with Arkane Studios "rebooting" the franchise, I do see some potential with Morgan Yu, given the developer's pedigree with their world-building in the Dishonored franchise. However, more than ethnicity, the growth and evolution of the main character is what made Tommy from the original Prey so unique.
