Description This may be what's called a Piñon pine, but I'm not entirely sure. Don't let it's size fool you, that tree is probably hundreds of years old. The desert environment affords it little water that it can keep for long, so trees in the desert (mostly coniferous trees) grew slowly. It was not uncommon to see trees of this variety contorted like this one here. In fact, this was the norm.

Most people are familiar with the Saguaro Cacti. Did you know that particular species of plant also has a long lifespan? As a matter of fact, the signature trait of the species, the limbs that jut out of the side and reach skyward, only occurs after the cactus has celebrated it's hundredth birthday. Before that time, it is little more than a green, spiky tube.
