Description
The Craw are a small race of subterranean arthropods from Craw prime, the sole rocky world of the system. They consist of two segments, a head and a flexible abdomen. The abdomen contains their lungs and breathing spiracles. It also allows them to right themselves when flipped. Attached to their head segment, they have 8-10 walking limbs and 6 larger claws. Of these, 4 are slightly smaller and used for fine manipulation, while two are much larger and used for lifting and defense. While they have large main eyes, they have relatively poor vision, with their 2 larger compound eyes unable to see color or very far distances, while their smaller eyes can only detect light and dark. They grow fast, with craw lifespans averaging 24 years unaltered across 3 life stages, egg, charlie nymph, and adult. To compensate, their multiple antenni are very sensitive to air vibrations and smells, and can be used to "see" even in pitch blackness. Attached to their head segment as well is a large bivalve shell. This thick heavy shell is their primary defense against the radiation of their homeworld tas well as cave-ins. When closed it makes an airtight seal, and nothing short of power tools can open it. This does limit the amount of time they can keep "clamped" but also gives maximum protection.
Due to their inability to make vocal sounds other than a soft squeak when rapidly expelling air from their spiracles, they use two separate non vocal languages. The first one is a touch based language called "clicktap", where they tap their many antenni on one another to communicate. The other language, called "thrumming" by the locals, is made by rhythmically stamping their many feet in specific patterns then picking up the vibrations. Due to this, normal voice based translators do not work, and thus the species either uses back mounted Clicktap pads or ride along on elevated platforms that pick up Thrummspeak.
A very social race, the Craw require socialization, with the average Craw lasting around 2 hours in isolation before showing signs of stress. They have a strong desire for physical contact and will almost always be found surrounded by friends. Incredibly loyal, Craw will not hesitate to die for the greater good of the whole.
The Craw were originally discovered by Revorian mining scouts. Unaware of the planet being inhabited the ship started the work only to be met with justified opposition. The miners were eventually killed after heavy fighting on both sides. Not long after however, the missing team came to the attention of the main revorian logistics teams, who sent more scouts to investigate. This resulted in an all out war that lasted many years. The Craw suffered incredibly heavy casualties, but to their credit, gave up every inch of their rock kicking and screaming.
Under heavy bombardment towards the end of the war, the remaining forces of the Craw decided to build great war escape ships, and planned to launch them while distracting revorian forces with a final stand on the opposite side of the planet. They managed to buy enough time for around 75% of the massive ships to take off and use stolen worm drive tech to ftl out of the system. Unfortunately, said tech was not well researched, and thus even more were destroyed or sent flying off into random areas of unmapped wormspace. To this day uncontacted βsleepyheadβ escape ships, as the planet bound Craw call them, are still being discovered in various places throughout the galaxy.
Back on the home planet, Craw were nearly wiped completely out with only a few pockets of resistance left remaining. This win for revorian forces didn't go unnoticed by famagon forces. Who invaded the system not long after the revorian had started mining. The Craw home system became a fierce battle ground for both forces. With the vast majority of their infrastructure destroyed, all the remaining Craw could do was watch. Soon though, Famagon forces learned of the native species attempting to reconsolodate themselves during the battle. Contact was made and soon famagon forces started to turn the tide in the Craws favor, eventually winning back the system.
Nowadays the planet bound Craw are loyal allies with the famagons, their incredible industrial capabilities fully supporting the war effort. Of the "sleepyheads" who have been discovered they remain independent, having rejoined together where they can into a large independent fleet. They are farely xenophobic compared to the "rock lovers" and are distrusful of the galaxy as a whole.
