Digital Art Week
In this tutorial I'll show you the process of drawing people, using a base of basic shapes which can be used to draw different types of figures.
The Base
First, we'll create the base. For this, remember that in their most basic form, every person is composed by a head, a torso, and two legs and arms, so we're going to create a structure composed of simple shapes resembling these:
- Draw a circle, this will be the head. For the neck, simply draw two little lines at the bottom of the circle.
- For the torso, draw a rectangle beneath the neck. It doesn't need to be a perfect rectangle, in fact is best if it's slightly modified so it resembles a human torso.
- Two more rectangles will make the legs.
- Finally, another 2 rectangles on the sides of the torso will make the arms.
This is the structure in its most basic form. You can still add one more element to make it more complete: For the elbows and knees, if you break the rectangles for the arms and legs in two, and place them at different angles, you can create more dynamic poses.
How the Base works
You can now use this base as a guide to make your final drawing. For that you draw on top of the base, using the structure as your guide.
The same base could be used for different drawings, adding different details. For example, you can draw a boy or a girl, using the same guide.
The base will help you determine the pose of the character, so you don't have to figure out where the arms or the legs should go; you already did that in the basic structure. By changing the details like the hair, clothes, and faces, you can create different characters using the same principles.
To draw people with different body types, change the proportions of the basic shapes in the structure. More round proportions will make chubby people, more tall and slender shapes will make tall and thin people.
You can change these same proportions to also draw people of different ages: Adults have smaller heads in proportion to the rest of the body, kids have bigger heads and also bigger eyes.
We're going to start drawing!
For this, it's highly recommended to create a new layer and place it on top of the base layer, then you draw there. This will keep your lineart separate from the base so it will be a lot easier to erase it, because you don't want it to be in the final product. It's also recommended to create the base in a different color than black, so you won't confuse it with the final lineart.
Clothes
When drawing clothes, avoid using straight lines as they won't look natural. Look at the clothes you're wearing right now.
In real life clothes don't look this straight:
Draw more curved lines and follow the same flow, this way your clothes will look more natural:
To draw a girl's torso, remember that women have a more prominent waist, also don't forget the breasts!
Arms
When drawing arms and legs, avoid using straight lines and squared angles (as shown in the top image).
Remember the human form is curvy, even if you're drawing a thing character, so use rounded corners to make them look more natural (as shown in the bottom image).
Legs
The same applies to pants; once again remember to avoid using straight lines (image on the left). In real life, jeans get some folds near the knees and at the bottom, near the ankles (image on the right).
Add some extra lines to represent the folds in the clothes to improve this look, they'll make them look more natural.
Hands
To draw hands you can also draw a mini-base, by drawing a circle and then adding elipses for the fingers. Don't forget to draw the wrists!
If you want to draw anatomically correct hands, of course you would need to add another finger, but most stylised cartoon characters get away with having only four digits.
The Face & Ears
To draw the face, start with two big dots; these will be the eyes. A small curved line will be the nose and a bigger curve at the bottom will be the mouth. Add two curved lines on top of the dots to finish the eyes.
If you make these last curved lines touch the left or the right upper part of the dots will make your character look to either direction. Remember to place both lines always in the same direction, otherwise your character will appear to be cross-eyed.
To semi-circles on the sides will make the ears.
Hair
When drawing the hair, remember that hair has some volume, it needs to go slightly above the line of the head.
At the end, don't forget to erase the line of the head, because it is covered by the hair.
Finishing Touches
At the end, simply erase (or make invisible) the base layer and you're finished!
Some extra Tips and Tricks
Remember that clothes make the body look ticker, for example if you're adding long sleeves, draw them outside of the arms, surrounding them.
And just like with the pants, remember to add folds at the level of the elbows, to make them look more natural.
When drawing a face in a 3/4 position, draw a cross as a guide, to determine the position of the nose, mouth and eyes. Also, note how the eye that is closer to the viewer should appear slightly bigger than the other.
Try using brushes in different size to draw details like the eyes and mouth, details in the hair and folds in the clothes.
That's it!
So there you have it. You can use this process to draw different types of people using the same bases, and changing the proportions and positions you'll be able to draw any kind of people with different body types and ages.

That was a good read, and quite a surprise to see what was beyond the title. Have read a lot of tutorials on what one usually finds and is usually seeking searching for "figure drawing", but rarely see one on drawing cartoon characters rounded down to their most basal abstract shapes.
