These are great! The background is coming along nicely, too. If I were you I would alter the lighting on the character sprites to look more centered (if possible), otherwise it looks like the lightsource is changing when they switch which direction they are facing. That kind of bothered me about Shovel Knight actually, but maybe I am just a stickler!

The light source was chose like that because my idea was to make the sprites look as simple as possible while maintaining good visual quality. That's just how 2D art "works" in games, that's true that from artist perspective light source changes but also every map will have different lightsource or/and possibly many of them so as you can see that's not possible to create perfectly accurate lights and shades with classic pixel art techniques. Maybe If we'd decide to use SpriteLamp for example effect would be better (I'd really like to work with SpriteLamp and sprites one day).
