My pride and joy -- at least part of it!
These two doors are mounted on brass hinges as part of a much larger, kinetic installation that, when fully assembled, resembles a historical shuttered triptych like one might see in religious scenarios. These pieces were painted in oil & acrylic on pine, which was hand-shaped to match the silhouette of a recycled tabletop piece that makes up the interior-most portion of the installation. All together, the work is called Bridges and discusses (in part) the duality mysticism I've experienced in my earth walk so far.
The figure shown centred in Coyote Calling is representative of several things. The first reference is tied to the female energy, as seen in the details of the figure. Building on that, the composition was built up with Yin in mind -- the softer of two universal energies, contrasted to Yang, and seen in things like the night, the cold, negative space, and more. I plan to have an accompanying pair of doors that works with Yang.
The Indigenous folk spirit Coyote is the second significant reference. As a trickster, stories around Coyote often tend to skew towards the negative. I see tricksters as being more than that, however. I see them as forces of good, with their sense for humour, play, and subversion being especially valuable in times like we see in contemporary life. I hope to bring a different lens to Coyote and all their fellow spirit guides in my work to come.
Stay tuned for more in regards to this piece, as well as other projects from me! There's so much more on the way.
