Just something that came to mind for a future endeavor. You guessed it! A Superman reboot/redesign. The biggest problem I have always had with the "S" shield is that is an "S". The Kryptonians were supposed to be a hyper-technologically advanced ALIEN society...you know, with their own script and language. With the wonderful new Kryptonian characters made for the 'Man of Steel' film readily available it didn't take long to find inspiration for a remake. I can now say it makes sense. It looks Kryptonian enough to pass for a house crest yet could easily be mistaken by the unknowing people of Earth for a crazy looking "S" in a shield.
