Season: 9
SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER
September was quiet on the racing front. It gave the humans of BCC time to adjust to all the changes that had happened that summer. Liam had stopped skulking around the backstretch and once more threw his energies into racing. Eddie had grinned and bounced around him like an excited puppy. There was a new shadow in the Irishman’s eyes, however, and bystanders could catch him gazing at his wedding gift saddle from time to time as he sat in deep contemplation. Sometimes people would ask Dani about it, but she just shrugged them off. She had a strong suspicion of the cause, though, and its name was Javier.
She kept her mouth shut, though. She had promised.
The Colombian in question was still more absent than not. He didn’t hang around the barn anymore and it hurt her soul, fracturing it a little more every day that passed, because she knew that she was the cause of it.
Another weight on her shoulders was her husband’s more… questionable lineage. She had been watching Eddie with an eagle eye and he hadn’t shown any strange behaviors, hadn’t slipped away for seemingly random phone calls in hushed corners or mentioned his parents or any siblings in passing.
She should ask again, but he hadn’t exactly been forthcoming about it the first time. So she bided her time. Waiting. Watching.
A few states over in the heart of horse country, Alex was settling into her role as Assistant Trainer at Black Creek Crossing Stables. She was also developing her dressage skills much faster now that she had a calmer environment to practice in. Backstretch arenas covered in mud a dressage elite did not make. Noddy also loved the different energy that the farm provided and spent his days whinnying across the fences to the other stallions. He was still intact, though he was a half breed. Alex had scheduled a gelding appointment for late September but Lia had convinced her not to. The farm’s teaser stallion was getting up in age and Noddy would fill his horseshoes nicely. The colt had to earn his keep, after all.
When she wasn’t spending time in the saddle or teaching Faith how to spend time in one, too, Alex was with the freshmen. That year had yielded a massive crop of two-year-olds. Emma and her team had already finely tuned most of them for the end-of-summer auctions, but a few of the more promising ones remained behind to eventually join Cyrus’s string. Hanson had been the only one to graduate from the training barn so far, but the twins weren’t too far behind him.
Sure enough, as the middle of September broke the heat wave spell that encased the upper middle-eastern states, Emma boarded up Midas and Silenus and sent them on their way. The team had moved to Del Mar now to take on the Westerners on their home turfs. The twins weren’t quite ready for that yet, but the energy of the backstretch would do them some good. They turned heads, too, all vibrant, shimmering coats dotted with flecks of white.
In attitude, they were night and day. Midas was tiny but mischievous, always causing trouble wherever and whenever he could. Si was more reserved and far more focused. The latter started developing in leaps and bounds; so quickly, in fact, that Cyrus reworked Si’s projected start date to fit in a couple of races before the Breeder’s Cup.
Midas, of course, was still learning which direction to run in.
They were Hemali colts, though, which meant a lot attention was directed their way. The stallion, now well past his prime, was still churning out champion after champion and BCC had had the best luck of them all. Thus, as Aztec punched his way through another easy win in the Gold Cup, his youngest BCC-bred brother broke his maiden in the Grade I Frontrunner Stakes by speeding away in the stretch to secure a four-length lead.
A week later, Snowbird and Bulle went out at the same time, one at Santa Anita and the other at Keeneland. This time, they both secured the winner’s circle as well as their automatic in for the Breeder’s Cup.
All in all, October was an impressive month for BCC as horse after horse trounced through the winner’s circle in their black and blue regalia.
Datura and Awapuhi were just as active, as was Thunder Bay and a handful of other impressive names in the bunch. All paled in the face of the impending showdown however, for one horse in particular had been especially silent on the racing front.
The Breeder’s Cup Classic would soon be upon them, and the Painted Horse would face off against the King for the first time.
