It was little surprise that Lia’s first colt was black in hue, and even less of a surprise that he had a somewhat… unkind nature. He was not outright vicious, but the BCC 2.0 team had been spoiled by Moirai’s easygoing and aloof nature and Canaan’s puppy dog attitude. Saber, on the other hand, was grumpy on a good day and downright belligerent on a bad one. He did not take to tack well and refused to listen to his rider’s commands while exercising. When put with other colts in the schooling paddock, he nipped and bit and kicked until they veered away from him and there was little the riders could do to control their behavior.

Though Lia had long since grown out of her fear of horses, she still stayed away from the ornery ones. As such, she took a hands-off approach with Saber, leaving Cyrus in charge of all the decisions. It was a daunting task. He remembered watching an impressive bay colt race across the tracks of North America over a decade ago and wished that Saber was more like his sire. Trenton had a kind disposition and talent in spades. His dark son seemed to possess neither.

With Saber’s future on hold until he figured out how to run without biting his opponents, Black Creek Crossing focused on its star fillies.

While Moirai was in fine form as winter morphed into spring, April did not treat her as kindly as March did. The 8 furlong Honey Fox was a GII and held a strong turf group of older mares, most far more seasoned than BCC's golden one.

Canaan, meanwhile, continued to impress. Since few allowance races ran longer than 8 furlongs, they entered her into another one again, mostly so that Cyrus could test his theory. He had a nose for horseflesh and a way of reading their minds to pick out what they wanted most. Canaan wanted to run longer. But she was a filly, and only the boys had the opportunity to go long distances at such a young age. So Cyrus threw her into another allowance race, and once again she galloped out strong after another third place finish.

It was time to move up. It was time to really test her.

And so, as April bled into May, he threw her into long morning works. She began to regularly punch out two mile runs at top speeds, and the backstretch regulars began asking more pointed questions about her future. Mum was the word from the Black Creek Crossing camp, however.
Inside Cyrus’s office, half-hidden under piles of daily race cards, rested the third quarter of the National Stakes Conditions bulletin. The 10 furlong Alabama Stakes was circled in bright red pen. They had until August to get there.
