Short story is short. Buuuut it's kind of important.

Robby Dolorez slipped a halter bridle over his new gelding’s nose and ran his hand over the horse’s eyebrows, clearing away stray forelock hairs in a loving manner. Creed chortled softly and reached out to grab Robby’s shirt with his lips. He was a clingy thing, but cute nonetheless; he had stolen Robby’s heart upon their first meeting and had yet to give it back. The fact that he had a soft spot for grays didn’t help any.

One stall over, another horse kicked his stall door and whinnied unhappily. “Hush, you temperamental thing,” Robby chastised. “I’ll get to you in a minute.” Secretz chuffed and picked up his empty feed bucket, flinging it around as if to protest. His antics screamed for attention. Robby ignored him.

Robby led Creed out of his stall and turned to the only other person occupying his end of the barn this early in the morning. “You sure you’re up to this?” he asked as he waved the jockey forward. The woman smiled, her face as innocent as an angel.

“Don’t worry, boss-man,” she all but purred. “Give me five minutes to get to know him and he’ll be putty in my hands.”

Robby shook his head doubtingly but stepped back nonetheless. Sierra swayed up to Secretz and placed her hands on the half door. “Hello, handsome,” she sang in a strange, lyrical way. “What are you doing, hmm?” The chatter that followed was nonsensical, repetitive and not worth repeating, but the tone changed in an indescribably hypnotic way. Secretz froze, visibly puzzled, as did Creed and Robby. Sierra wove a spell over the horses without even trying, doing nothing but standing there and changing her vocal pitch.

“What on earth are you doing?” Robby breathed.

Sierra barely glanced at him. “Attracting his attention,” she said in that same lyrical tone. “Aren’t I, boy? Hmm? Yes I am! You’re gorgeous, aren’t you? Yes? Yes you are!”

“Um… Why?” Robby asked hesitantly.

Sierra sighed and turned to him. “Horses are smart, boss-man,” she informed him in her normal voice. “You can’t just walk up and hop on their backs and expect them to accept you. Especially not one as strong-hearted as this handsome thing.

“So first, you attract their attention,” she continued. “The easiest way to do this, of course, is to change the pitch of your voice. They like questions. It makes them feel important.”

Robby shrugged and said, “Of course!” as if he knew what the heck she was talking about.

Sierra bobbed her eyebrows gleefully. “Now I have his attention, see?” She chortled a little tune and Secretz’s ears flew forward once more. “He’s officially curious.” She reached out with a hand and, sure enough, Secretz leaned closer to sniff. Then he butted her outstretched appendage with his muzzle and she dutifully gave him a scratch.

“What say you and I take a spin around the ol’ cornfield, eh handsome?” Sierra saddled the wayward two-year-old without a problem and hopped into the saddle. “Hurry up, boss-man; we’re wasting daylight!”

Robby watched Sierra guide Secretz out of the barn and toward the track—or, as she put it, ‘the ol’ cornfield.’ She was an odd little duck, that was for sure. And yet, one only had to see her in action to know that somehow, some way, she made the craziness work.

It was only until he himself was sitting in Creed’s saddle and following behind Sierra that he noticed her all-white outfit. Even her boots and helmet were white that day. He shook his head.

“Don’t question the crazy if it works, Robby,” he told himself. So he didn’t.

Temperament: Surprisingly enough, when it comes to other horses Secretz is no instigator, but rather a follower. He's a bully but prefers to do the dirty work, the grunt work, leaving the brains to someone else. He does what he's told when he's told to do it, no questions asked. Unfortunately, he seems to have no scruples and no remorse. If someone (or something) goads him into attacking someone or something, he will without hesitation. People, however, are a different story altogether. For the most part, he acts the same, but he loves pranking others. A pulled shirt here, a missing bucket there, a faked injury; all in a day's work for this horse.

Temperament: A curious but lovable bug, Creed knows no fear of anyone or anything. He has an odd fascination with metal objects including training gates and trailers, making him an ideal paddock buddy for those more inclined to panic. While he will never race due to his awkward gate, he was raised around the racetrack and thus knows the ins and outs of the sport like few others. Thus, he makes for a fine track pony for trainer Robby Dolorez.
