Description i just thought i deserved an own submission

mask for my ergo proxy cosplay

made among others from wire, newspaper, acrylic colors, glue and spackle (thanks for the helpful comments to find out the right english term ) it dries to a hard layer that can be sanded to a nice, smooth finish
also, for the strap i used that kind of transparent 'bra strap' which can usually bought by themselves. worked very well here, might use it for other masks too

Doesn't seem like you're much active on DA anymore but it's worth a shot. I can see what you used as materials to make the mask. But could you enlighten me as to how you made the base bask? Did you put papermache on your face and let it harden or like, yeah. If I can just find out how the base was made I should be able to make the mask!

ThundersSilence In reply to Tiase [2015-03-19 13:54:13 +0000 UTC]

hey, I still am on DA once in a while, just not very active and not in the cosplay area anymore Β
I had a friend make a plaster cast of my face and then used that to help me to bend the basic frame of the mask out of wire. You should be able to make a wireframe even without a plaster cast though: make a general outline, "weave" some more wire in between and then press it to your face to get the right shape. then apply paper strips, later paper machΓ©.
If you want to make more masks of course a plaster cast is of course easier to work with - don't have to stand in front of a mirror all the time. But if you have a friend make one, be careful to keep the plaster out of your eyes (it hurts!)
good luck with your costume!

Thank you for the reply!

I have looked up some videos on youtube already on how to get a a plaster cast of ones face and have a good idea.
When you say wire, what kind did you use? Like, was it chicken wire? Thin wire? Thick wire?
It's a bit hard to imagine how that went. I was thinking that once I had a plaster cast of my face that I could apply something to protect the cast, and then put a layer of paper mache over all of it, then maybe chicken whire on it, and another layer papermache and make sure it was solid enough. Draw the masks form out on it ( did you use any specific reference or just a random one? ), cut it out and apply some spackle ( did you do that on both sides or only on the outer side?

But yeah, again, thanks. This should help me a lot!

ThundersSilence In reply to Tiase [2015-04-03 14:38:59 +0000 UTC]

I used just some basic steel/iron wire, mine was about 0.8mm thick I guess. I searched for a whole array of reference pictures and then made a "best of" of it (Ergo Proxy unfortunately isn't very consistent in the quality of the animation and gets pretty bad in between, I don't think you can have too many reference pictures ) A lot of it I kind of made up along the way, meaning after I had the basic outline of wire and applied the first layers of paper and paper machΓ© I still cut away some of it on some places then added more mass in others, sculpting it. applying different thickness of material, e.g. more on the "cheekbones" and other parts help to give it a more "fleshed out" look. generally, well made paper machΓ© is surprisingly sturdy, the thickest past of my mask is only about 2 cm and that's with the spackle on it!
I only put spackel on the outside - my inside actually looks really crappy, I just checked it again and noticed I also have masking tape on the inside (that was probably my first layer to fix the wires in the right position even before the paper machΓ©) also, the inside is stained black because the dark face paint I used for the cosplay ^^'
But your plan sounds good, too! I think it should work well Β

Tiase In reply to ThundersSilence [2015-04-05 22:37:28 +0000 UTC]

So you didn't use something with a bigger surface like chicken wire where you can just roll a sheet out and press it down on your face, but used like used a single line steel/iron wire?
I think I'll stick with chicken wire for that.

Because now I'm thinking I could save the money and not buy alginite and all of that stuff. It's not like I'm making special make up, but a mask.
But again, a lot of helpful and insight full things. So thanks for the help!

I'm really sorry, and i really appreciate that you like it so much you would want me to make you one, but i am really way to busy now and in the near future. also, it would really be VERY expensive, and i would have to send it, which is tricky with this kind of mask
but again, thanks for your interest!
