“Well, his real name is Murphy, but he has lots of nicknames. I mean, y’know, there’s Murph and Murphster and all, but I also sometimes call him Thudders and Sploochie. You know how it is. He’s so sweet... I’ve had him since he was tiny. Not much bigger than your hand... and now look at him! Look at those eyes... and that soft belly! I can’t stand it... I just love him so much!

“Does he...? Oh yeah, he does charge things. Yep, that’s pretty common. He bonks into all sorts of things. He’s learned that you can get stuff off a table sometimes by bonking into the legs until it falls off. He broke a leg off my mom’s dining room table when we were back for Thanksgiving. Ate the pumpkin pie. She was so mad! Oh, and he can chew. Can he ever chew! You know those toys they sell for protos, the ones they say are supposed to be indestructible? I got him one for his birthday. Ten minutes... that was all it took him to chew it in half. He has an old tire in the yard that he loves... that works better.

“Guys I date... they have to dig Murphy, or it’s no go. Love me, love my proto. That’s the deal, no negotiations. He’s pretty easy to get along with... you know, he comes up and does that little honking thing, and he’ll let you scratch his belly once he sniffs you. Every so often, I meet a guy that he just doesn’t like. There was this guy from my Art History class... Jimmy? George? Anyway, Murph took one sniff at him, and he launched himself at the guy like a bowling ball! He looks out for me. He’s my sweetie. I love him so much.”
