Derek is a hard to get a grip on at times. many members have a hard time reading him or getting an understanding of his motivations. this is primarily due to the fact that he rarely speaks or communicates unless absolutely necessary. typically having the other generals relay any information or instructions in his place. Silent and mysterious, Derek's interactions with common members are rare typically consist of him quietly observing others or writing out a few words on his whiteboard. He tends to mostly stick close to the other generals and seems to avoid those he isn't as familiar with. Avoiding social interactions as much as possible, Derek tends to focus much of his energy on work, sorting through a seemingly endless pile of paperwrok, mission reports, and other information. such a job would normally be overwhleming to anyone else, but he seems to enjoy it. He is a very practical and focused worker, always trying to find the most efficient means of accomplishing a goal.

Derek has an odd habit of being... scary, and it is difficult for members to tell how much of it is and isnt intentional. limping around the base in the middle of the night, standing silently in place for extended periods of time, seemingly appearing and disappearing without a sound. All of it has resulting in Derek having somewhat of a reputation as a 'cryptid' on the base, which he doesnt mind. This being said, Derek seems to enjoy the frightening and strange, having a history of using this to his advantage. As much as he has embraced it, Derek can still get self-conscious in regards to his heavily scarred face which is why he typically wears a mask.

Backstory:
Derek was born in the American south, his parents owned a small company and they lived comfortably. In his youth, Derek showed promise in school but his intelligence lacked drive or direction. He never really showed interest in many topics until he was 15. One day, while exploring the woods behind his father’s property with his friend Elliot, the two boys encountered a deer parasite that had snuck up on the younger Elliot and infected him. Derek had watched in a mix of horror and fascination as his friend was changed before his eyes, an event that would change the course of his life. Eventually he was able to get his newly transformed friend back to the property safely and call the authorities to get Elliot the proper help.

From that moment on, Derek devoted his time and energy to a new passion, Neo-Zoobiology, the Study of parasites, infected, and Chimera. With the infected crisis constantly growing with no end in sight, the field was open to new minds but very competitive. Derek slowly but surely worked his way through school and college, getting grants to attend further schooling at Invium, the heart of the new age of science and technology. Through schooling, Derek studied heavily on biology, anatomy, evolution, and other subjects to help understanding of the strange new field of Neo-ZooBiology. At the age of 26, he had published his first scientific article on the processes by which living animals convert into parasites, a multi-year study on dissections of the remains of parasite cadavers his university had been given access to.

Derek’s efforts did not go unnoticed, and he was given his shot as an intern under the government scientists that were directly studying the infection crisis. It was the culmination of Derek’s life dream, being at the forefront of scientific breakthroughs. He worked diligently for months in his new position and was under consideration to become a fully accredited researcher… but nothing good lasts. It was an exciting prospect, Soldiers had managed to sedate and capture a wolf-tiger Chimera. It was a fearsome specimen but due to the short lifespan of chimera, the chance to study a live one in captivity was invaluable… it would have been anyway, had they not underestimated the amount of sedatives needed to keep it asleep. The creature awoke and broke its restraints, rampaging through the facility as it maimed anything in its path… unfortunately Derek was in its path, the monster’s claws leaving him with life threatening wounds.

Bleeding and half unconscious from pain, Derek managed to drag himself into one of the testing labs for safety, where he saw the chance to save his life. A jackal parasite, captured and put in stasis, intended for study in regards to its mutation and darker than normal coloration. Derek had spent half his life studying infected, learning about the potential and limitations of their healing factors. It was a desperate ploy, as there was a chance that becoming infected would help him survive the wounds rapidly weakening him… but there was an equal chance the system shock of transformation would kill him outright. Desperate to live, Derek used the last of his strength to extract the parasite from its pod and shove it down his throat.

His gamble paid off, for Derek eventually woke up alive… but it was not without major consequences. Derek’s severe injuries had not been able to heal properly, leaving him with horrific scars on his body and half his face missing. Moreover, he was in a hospital bed, strapped down and collared. It quickly became clear that he was intended to be sent to the Tamed. Not only was his body still broken, but all his hopes for the future had been shattered. The government was sure to never allow him to regain his position as a researcher of infected if he was condemned to the Tamed… but it would not stay this way, Derek decided. He had seen both the best and the worst of how infected were treated and now that he was one, he would have no part of it. As soon as Derek had recovered enough, he made a desperate escape. In this escape, Derek would discover a tool that would keep him safe for months to come. Fear. his body was broken and weak, but Derek’s appearance as a human and as an infected could inspire fear in all from the seasoned soldier to an aggressive infected. So this was Derek’s new path, fleeing to the depths of the slums, haunting a territory of his own. Keeping himself safe by learning new ways to confuse and terrify those that might do him harm… at least until he met a rather large wolf infected that simply didnt understand fear, the rest is history.

- Derek is the secretary of the Harmony, he organizes all the logistical aspects of running the organization. everything from repair requests to determining which members are best suited to certain missions
- Derek developed a deep fascination with horror films, which he watches frequently for 'inspiration'
- due to the injuries he suffered before infection, Derek is subject to chronic pain which causes him to have a distinct 'Zombie-like' limp when walking in any form. He does take some medication to deal with it, but some days are worse than others. on particularly bad days, Derek may rely on a cane to get around, or a wheelchair if someone is willing to help him
- Derek has a Bachelor's degree in Biology, majoring in the relatively new field of Neo-ZooBiology
- while he does enjoy his current work, Derek does still miss his career as a researcher of infected. this does occasionally manifest in him taking unique interest in infected that display unique traits or mutations. He often acts as a consultant to Mint in the medical bay, as his understanding of infected anatomy and biology is often helpful in dealing with unique medical issues
- Derek is incredibly weak and slow due to his injuries, thus very rarely deploys for fieldwork. in the rare occasion he is, Derek defends himself in a unique fashion. he can be incredibly stealthy, and uses both the enviroment and his appearence to intimidate and frighten potential threats as a form of psychological warfare.
- Derek drinks an unhealthy amount of coffee on a daily basis
- Derek is a Polygot. he can understand English, French, and Japanese. he also frequently communicated through American and Japanese sign language
- his scarred face and exposed teeth can be intimidating to others and this makes derek self conscious when he isn't intentionally trying to frighten people, thus he typically wears a mask to cover his face and only eats/drinks in private.
