Description
February 2017 Combo ChallengeDeviations used as inspiration:
Frecce Tricolori by Daniel-Wales-Images fav.me/daylqha
pins by vanilla-tapes fav.me/d1nuxw5
Midway by TrablaMonRon fav.me/d9wl08w
So for this one, my approach was to focus on a feeling, instead of creating a unique look for a character. For each inspirational photo, I thought of words that I associate with it and combined them altogether.
What I got were:
(1) Frecce Tricolori --> patriotism, bravery
(2) pins --> pain, wounds
(3) Midway --> innocence, small
I had a hard time coming up with an idea but then it finally clicked (after 2 whole days omg). The simple premise of this character scene was about protecting the innocent from harm. It might not seem that way because he still has scratches but the broken fighter helmet beside him is supposed to convey that someone died protecting him. That kinda thing. For the boy himself, I chose to make him a personification of a ferret since my line of thinking was somewhere along the lines of innocence=kids=animals=small animals...
To tie everything together with the given photos, the background choice and the fence is in reference to the first picture (italian fighter planes) and the pins respectively. It's really a big jumble of ideas in one piece but I'm glad I was able to finish it.
This is my round 2 for this month's challenge so as a personal challenge to myself, I decided to do this digitally. And not only that, but a pure one at that. I didn't do a lineart like I would usually do... It was crazy! I wasn't used to this process and I was unsure of everything. I understand a bit about blending and all but I don't know how to refine everything which kinda frustrates me. In the end, I like the result and this was good practice. I hope I can hone my digital painting skills more in the future.
I'm really curious to see if anyone has any other interpretations of my work, like for example, 'what story do you see in it ?' or 'what feeling does it give you?' so please comment below so I can know
