In Greek Mythology, Medusa was described as being a gorgon from birth to death, though she was the only one who was mortal. When she was beheaded by the hero Perseus, the great winged horse Pegasus sprung from her neck.

According to the Roman poet Ovid, however, she was once a beautiful maiden and a devoted priestess of Athena. Poseidon violated her while inside the temple of Athena. Her patron goddess transformed her into a gorgon then.

Moral of the Story: Ovid sucks.
