Description
Drawing unintentional inspiration from a bit of Eastern philosophy here (was reading up on some of my old architectural theory notes... yeah go figure XD ) The Yin Yang struck me as really appropriate for these two with its symbolism of interconnection and interdependence of opposing forces - Kind of like Vega and Chun's mutual attraction and repulsion towards each other.Note: I loosely applied this symbol more for graphic purposes, rather than going too deep into it because it is more profound than what I have actually implied here.
I used the "calligraphy brush" again considering the context, but the hardest part was somehow coming up with mid fight poses for them that would suit a Yin Yang design, and at the same time try to show them to be both beautiful and deadly as they are reputed to be.
Disclaimer: I am not suggesting any pairing possibilities with this pic. Merely just Vega vs Chun. You are welcome to interpret it otherwise, but please don't bite my head off for it (seeing as some people can get very passionate bout pairings...)
-----------
Minor changes made - taking some good advice from my buddy Namely, adding some ink splotches to give it more movement and depth, and I changed the angle of Chun's foot because it wasn't looking right with the flow before. Thanks, dude!

Always good to see these two going at it. Your linework and technical skills are great as always.
This isnβt your best though, and I think I know why. I do have a bit of a monumental critique ahead.
Bear with me, but I donβt see how Yin and Yang are relevant to Vega and Chun-Liβs relationship. From what I understand, Yin and Yang are complementary forces and that the world is at peace with said forces and they are required to coexist with each other (like how light canβt exist without shadow and vice versa, or the moon and the sun). Chun-Li and Vega are never at peace like that. They have a heated relationship and they both want to defeat the other one which is not yin and yang at all. Their relationship isnβt about balance.
I also think you really need to start to take bolder steps with your character's expressions. Dynamic poses arenβt enough; you need to convey more personality in the faces. Body language is important, but remember the face is the center of human expression and emotion. The faces drawn here are fairly stiff, especially given the battle context. I donβt see much energy here between the two here.
Try to consider the nature of the character and go from there. Ryu tends to not show much emotion since heβs Mr. Stoic but these two should be bursting with energy. Chun-Li looks only mildly miffed like she lost her Internet connection, not that she's in a heated an intense fight with her rival. She needs more intensity, more determination in her face. Slanting the eyebrows isnβt enough; show it in the depths of her eyes, the mouth, every facial feature there is. Vega has pretty much the same exact expression you always draw him in, and I think itβs holding you back. Try to step outside your comfort zone with him. Where's his sadism? His bloodlust? The thrill? These factors will all give more vigor and personality to an otherwise monotonous picture, especially a battling one.
Good references are of course fight scenes like in the Street Fighter II anime as well as live action movies like Bruce Leeβs and Kill Bill. Review the characterβs and the actorβs dispositions and try to translate that into your own style. Mio draws Vega and her characters in a high degree of liveliness so her art might be good to refer to as well.
Jeez that was long- sorry about how long it was. I hope this helps and I hope I didnβt sound too harsh. Ask me if you need me to clarify anything!

Thanks! I get what you mean with the yin yang thing. I guess I kinda took some elements of it and dumbed it down a bit β I was actually going more with the never ending struggle between them two and the eternal flow that the symbol had helped me to come up with this idea in the first place, but perhaps I should have not mentioned that relation with the symbol in that caseβ¦ Actually, an ouroboros of the serpent eating its own tail might have been a better theme reference, but I just happened to see the yin yang first when I was flipping through my notes LOL
Agreed with the expressions. I always have trouble when it comes to drawing Chun, but thatβs not an excuse XP Iβll have to examine facial expressions further and yeahβ¦ I do have this thing with drawing Vega with a slight smirk LOL I did mention earlier in my WIP that I was having quite a bit of trouble with thisβ¦ the poses, the expressions β perhaps this is something still beyond my current abilitiesβ¦

I think Chun-Li and Vega are more closely suited to Western dualism; That good and evil will be in perpetual conflict. Not that they are so black and white, but I think that matches them better than Yin and Yang.
I understand you have that preference for Vega, but I think it's time you try drawing him in more dimensions. Think about his character, there's a lot to him. He can be a composed nobleman, but he's also very unstable, and his bloodlust. He's also HELLA pissed when he gets his face hurt lol. Depicting him in other dimensions and expressions will give your art more variety and vigor I think.
I hope the references I listed help you. I think they're all good for reviewing expressions. Hell, you could watch the fight scene between the two again and pause it at different times; I think that would help a lot.
As for the Ouroboros I don't think that works for SF... it's about how things begin again as soon as they end and seems like a stretch

Cool. Next time I decide to make references to symbolism and stuff I'll have to think through my words more carefully then XD I guess in the end it's more of a graphic design thing than real symbolism, which has a lot more depth than what I'm trying to depict here. Trying too hard with my desciptions LOL
Yeah I'll have to think about the expressions more... it's just that I don't prefer to draw him all psycho because there are a lot of that of him already out there (and from feedback I've been getting, people seem to appreciate that I don't draw him like that as well)... I think what I wanted in my version of Vega was the self confidence he has before the fight like he thinks/knows he's going to rip the opponent apart, rather than just pure blood lust - of course that alone can be interpretted in different ways...

It doesn't have to be blatant psycho. I just think showing more personality will help and be more energizing. Mio actually does a good balance with him like I said; maybe check out her works again

ok next Vega pic! I think I have an idea along the lines of pyscho, but subtle ;D But I'll have to sit down and think it through to get a clearer picture of what I'm gonna draw... This is why I don't draw characters I don't know LOL

Sorry but one more point; the poses are a bit confusing and awkward. It looks like Vega is about to slash at her and I'm wondering why Chun-Li isn't blocking...

TixieLix In reply to Mayleth [2013-03-18 23:00:17 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes, thatβs just me trying to get a flow in the compositionβ¦ I did try to have her block but it kinda broke the continuity of it so I had it in the end with her falling back into the page while heβs coming out of it.
Iβm also wondering now if I should change my symbol reference to the ouroboros? But that would be untrue since I did see it in the yin yang firstβ¦
