The enemy will always try to turn your attention away from Jesus and bring your attention back to yourself. Am "I" acting righteously here? Am "I" putting others first, or just trying to benefit myself? Is "my" motivation for doing this right? Am "I" acting good enough to represent my God to others? And while you are trying to be anti-selfish, by worrying about whether "YOUR" motivation is righteous enough or not, you are actually being self-centered. Trying to make yourself appear super-righteous in front of others is just self-righteousness.

Don't worry about trying to "act" righteous enough in front of others. You know that Jesus is good and righteous and His Word is true. God says you are counted as righteous no matter what you do, not because of your own righteous acts, but because you've trusted in His righteousness (Ephesians 2:8). Before you knew Jesus, your attempt to be righteous on your own was futile. But now that you are a "new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17), the good things that you do come from Him. You are compelled by the love of Christ (2 Cor. 5:14) and His love law is written on your heart (Jeremiah 31:33). Righteousness is your new nature. It is "natural" to you. So don't second guess yourself by worrying about your motivation. Now, to say that you are not good enough is to say that He is not good enough. But you honor Him when you refuse to worry about trying to make yourself look good, and instead let Him take care of that.
