This is the Mexican wolf, the smallest sub-species of the Gray Wolf and one that is critically endangered. With only 50 wolves in the wild and approximately 300 in captivity, facilities around the US are trying to restore this fading breed. In the Columbus Zoo alone, the alpha female has produced 22 pups on her own, which is a very amazing thing.

Mexican wolves originally were hunted along the US-Mexican border by government agencies due to a decline in natural food sources for them, which led to the wolves attacking livestock. By the 1950's, there were no more living in the wild but in 1976, they were deemed an Endangered Species and became protected. Since then, we have been trying to correct a terrible wrong by saving the Mexican Wolves from extinction.
