MENTAL ILLNESS >> Depression

About it: unlike TV or Medicine commercials, depression is not constant saddness or agony, its not as though your holding a mask over your face with a smile on it, you can feel happy and cheerful some days, sometimes for many days in a row, sometimes scattered. Depression is unpredictable and comes in waves and episodes, some days you can be happily chatting with friends and others you can be sitting in your bed with the blanket over your head while never wanting to get up and do anything.

Depression often causes feelings of Saddness, Drowsiness, and Lack of modivation. For some, it can cause feelings of aggrivation, truely everyone is different. Depression comes in many forms, Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that appears during the changing of seasons, Bipolar disorder, also commonly called manic depression often comes in moodswings, where someone has depressive lows, and manic highs. It veries from person to person, not one person is the same.

Depression cannot be easily fixed, it often takes therapy, medicine, and a strong support group to make it through, or at least help, Telling someone to quit being such a downer or to stop being sad often only makes it worse, knowing your not like everyone else is hard on those with depression, thus constantly telling them something of the sort negetively effects the person and can cause them to be frustrated. Depression is not just some cool trend, not something fun to have, it heavily effects peoples lives, and is hard to live and deal with.

Depression has many causes, its not just simple small imbalences, the phrase of that doesnt capture how hard and severe depression is. While chemicals in the brain are involved, its not that one is too high, or one is too low. Reasearch has shown that some people with depression have a smaller hippocampus (a small organ located in the brain that is associated with memory) after reasearching 24 women with a history of depression it was found the hippocampus was on average 9% to 13% smaller in depressed women then it was in women who did not suffer from it. They are currently exploring possible links to the slower production of neurons and low moods. Stressful events in life can also trigger depression, stress plays a large role in depression, your gentetics often set how sensitive you are to stress and hard events. Its also a fact that depression is the most common disease to be passed down in a bloodline. There are many more causes of depression that i will not be getting into, but those are some examples.

Character:
Toadsneeze has severe depression. For him, some days are bright, the sky is blue, the sun is shining and he feels as though he can do anything he sets his mind to, others, he stays in his nest all day sleeping to hide his inner emotional stuggles from the world. He feels as though he isnt worthy of anything. Time seems to pass in an agonizingly slow pace, His effort and motivation is lower, he doesnt feel like doing things he loves. Or talking to those he cares for, though, sometimes talking it out truely helps him. Sometimes he just needs someone there to stay with him, other days he just wants to be alone. His mood varys day to day, their inconsitent, and toadsneeze understands that, he does his best to see the better in things on the days where hes at his lowest, he looses energy, faith, care, and glee in things he loves, but he knows that soon, he'll have a good day, and he looks forward to them.

Toadkit and his sister were born to a quick fling between Hickorybranch and Beetlecall, Hickorybranch tried to hide her pregnacy from Beetlecall but it didnt last long as the medicine cat asked him about how she was and ended up explaining she was expecting. When they were born, Hickorybranch named both of her kits, refusing to let Beetlecall touch them until their eyes opened, But when they opened she couldnt stop toadkits sister newtkit from prefering her gruff father. Toadkit always loved his mother more then anything, She was his everything and his only friend, Toadkit early on in his kithood started to get colds quite often and was constantly in the medicinecat den due to his mother getting worried for him. Hickorybranch adored her son and grew detatched to her daughter who was only ever around her father and only came to her when she was hungry, this left the two siblings quite distant from eachother. While they had the oppertunity to talk and play, Toadkit was too shy and awkard for newtkit, and newtkit scared toadkit. She eventurally gave up trying to get to know her shy and sickly brother, and decided to spend time with her friends instead, often teasing him behind his back.

apprenticeship [ 6 - 12 moons ] >
After being renamed to toadpaw he was given Blueleap as his mentor, a young beautiful molly, with blue fur. During his early apprenticeship, he started to notice he was ging through depressive moods. He told blueleap who understood and on days where he wanted to be alone let him be so as long as he was able to catch up on his training afterwards, even if he was sick, which he always did earning blueleaps respect. The molly noticed the toms hesitance while training with other apprentices and started to have him do battle training with just her, while he still struggled, he did far better then he had before. Eventurally the tom met a small shecat by the name of Dustpaw, a pale grey and tan tabby shecat who was apprenticed to Blueleaps friend. The two were both quite shy but bonded over their love for flowers and feathers and became close friends, something toadpaw needed.
