Description And thus the rococo lady started to see the appeal of the new vogue...

Obviously, I realize there are ten billion inaccuracies in this. I do find it infinitely amusing that ladies' fashion went from the restriction of Rococo to the (relatively) natural Regency era...and then corseted back up for Victorian! Make up your minds, ladies! FASHION JOKES, HAHA?

Baroque: big and imposing, so Spain and France can show off their great power.
Rococo: still somewhat big and imposing, again for France to show off.
Regency: relatively modest, considering the war going on at the time.
Victorian: the return of big, imposing, show-off aesthetics, as peace and industrialization arrives.
20th Century: 2 1/2 Wars + 1 Counterculture = world loses it's sense of refinery.
Early 21st Century: Swag (ie. the exact opposite of formality and refinery) is, unfortunately, in vogue.
Hopefully in the Near Future: the world falls in love with the Baroque Aesthetic again and regains it's sense of dignity.

I wear a corset...for my SPINE!! Though the dress is very drama-like to me.

It seems like people with spinal problems have a better sense of taste than people without, if only out of necesity.

Β Yeah. You have to make sure your clothes are big and lost and don't catch easily.

Glad I could be of some help! It's been my screensaver for a while now, so when I saw this it instantly reminded me of it ^.^ Your attempt at regency costume is much better than mine anyway! <3

They still wore corsets under the empire-waisted gowns, just that the natural waist wasn't the emphasis.

Oh yeah, they wore LOADS of crazy shit to get that silhouette.Β  They had these hilarious little pillows that they would tuck in-between their shoulder blades, too, just to make that line from the nape of the neck down to the floor completely straight.Β  Nuts.

I think there's a more simplicity and elegance to Regency whereas Rococo is more poofy, pink, and extravagant. I prefer Rococo, lol. It's so...ridiculous. XD

I love how, except for the wig, the guys aren't really dressed that differently- but the woman's carrying around like 100 pounds of extra skirt. Truly, our foremothers were mighty women! I'd fall over ded. I love corsets, I'm wearing one right NOW, but those skirts...!

Your expressions are just golden on this, too.

Yeah it's truly incredible how LITTLE men's fashion changed for centuries. Up until the business suit was introduced really, and now again, no real change for the last century! Haha love that you're wearing a corset. I've been trying to find just the perfect one on Etsy, one of these days!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Caraphae In reply to toerning [2012-01-20 20:10:46 +0000 UTC]

I resent the business suit for taking away even the hint of fab that men's clothes used to have. I want some popinjay back on the fellas, darn it! They've become so booorrrinng, I gotta go all counterculture to draw an interesting guy-suit. *fume fume art fume*

I've worn corsets daily for about seven years now. I don't tightlace! I just like the support, and not having to wear a bra.

On Etsy I highly recommend Jill Hoverman- she's made me several custom corsets, and her work's good and she loves communication.

Tell her Carapace sent you, if you go that route.
If you're looking for something cheaper, faster, I can also recommend Corset Story: [link] They give accurate measurements, and the corsets are REALLY well made, with serious steel and waist tape and all, just not the super-good fit a good custom will give. And, sometimes most importantly, they have amazing prices in their Sale and Corset of the Day sections.

...I get no money from these people, you know? I just have a bizarre love of boned clothing

Unfortunately I can't seem to find it online anywhere. It's titled "Oh, What Relics! Ah, What A Foolish Fashion!" (1797) and I found it in the first volume of the Kyoto Costume Institute book.

Ahhh good stuff! Don't forget those horrible wispy mustaches that were so popular among the young gentry! Fashion history is pretty hilarious, especially this era. The composition flows reaally nicely. I really appreciate the simplicity of the faces too. Lovely work, man.

Oh man, I'm just dying over here! Also, the Regency made up for the lack of panniers in the form of goofy bonnets. There's a chance that's where the hoops relocated, you know?

I'm just so tickled by this! Instant favorite!

LOL well it's always a generation gap at work here, apparently the Regency thought the Rococo era was horribly gaudy and too ornamented, and then the Victorian era thought the Regency era was too simple and flimsy with all the white muslin! XD
