"So you're finally getting hitched then?" Luan asked teasingly.
The two stags trudged through the snow, the chill in the air strong despite it being midday. Celestat had joined his friend on his guard rounds for the day. It wasn't a rare occurance for him to join in on guard rounds, but today there was more of a reason than just the fact that he enjoyed it.
Celestat gave a sheepish grin, feeling slightly uncomfortable, "Apparently." The official news had yet to come, but Lestat was trying to be optimistic.
Luan caught Lestat's discomfort. It only made his smile grow larger as he took the opportunity to tease his friend, "Took you long enough! Those horrible flirting skills on yours didn't chase this one off eh? And when do I get to be graced with meeting this princess?"
Lestat wrinkled his nose, feigning offense, "My flirting skills are impressive, not horrible." He paused, growing more serious and he could see Luan cock his head as he felt the shift. "I actually wanted to talk to you about that."
"Oh?"
"Understandably her father would like further protection. I have my own glade, as you know, but it's unguarded since, well, it's ridiculous in my opinion to have a guard of my own."
Luan shook his head, "I don't know, you lords can be pretty soft. It wouldn't hurt to have someone around to make sure you don't get attacked by a vicious sparrow or something."
Lestat rolled his eyes with a groan, before giving a glance around to ensure no one had heard Luan. His friend could forget his mouth in public at times and it wouldn't be good for the guardsman if the wrong fawnling heard him speaking so disrespectfully to a royal.
"Anyway, she already has a guard of her own, but to ensure my home is a safe place for her I promised her father I would find a glade guard as well."
Luan shifted his gaze to look forward, his smile gone. "I think I know where this is going."
"You're my most trusted friend, Luan, and I'd be honored if you'd come to serve as a guard for my glade."
Luan didn't react for a moment before abruptly snorting and busting up laughing, catching Lestat completely by surprise. After a moment the stag composed himself, "You know, this serious-type talk really doesn't suite you, Lestat."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Lestat grumbled, feeling slightly put-off by Luan's reaction, "Try to honor and compliment a fellow and he just up and makes fun of you."
"I'm deeply honored m'lord," Luan replied with a grin.
"You should be," Lestat returned, trying to hide the twitch of a smile at his lips. "I have bestowed upon you the greatest of gifts, to live within my grand glade!"
Luan chuckled, "You've got to be the worst royal in history."
"Not true. You should get a history lesson on the Glenmore royalty, it's an absolute mess."
Luan shook his head, grimacing, "No thanks."
The two walked in silence for a moment before Luan finally spoke up, "I guess guarding a royal's glade wouldn't be so bad, but I've got to put in the request. It's not garanteed."
Lestat smiled, feeling gratitude fill him at his friend's reply, "Well you know, you just so happen to know a lord and I hear those royals tend to have some pull with these sort of things."
