Description
A friend invited me at her dance training session. There I saw someone I thought was only a fictionnal character. I saw her friend too. Luckily, I had my camera with me, and they kindly allowed me to take a photograph of them. So now there's a proof she really existsThis picture is a fan art of 's fascinating character Ruth .
Just a few words of explanation, for those who don't know her: though she doesn't appear to have a head, the most important part of it, her brain (and a large part of her cranium) is still there, relocated at the top of her chest, so this is not pure fantasy. More details on the first picture jerek-uk made of Ruth here: Reduction only makes things stronger , on the caption and on the comments below.
A consequence of having no "external" head is that the only sense she has left is the touch.
Ruth is a ballet dancer. She was before she undergo those particularly extreme surgical operations (it's her on the poster near the woman in red), and she still is. I strongly recommend you go to Jerek's Ruth gallery to see and read the wonderful artwork and the stories he made about her. Ruth's transformation will soon no longer seem so totally unbelievable to you, and she will even appear very much alive. You'll even find an x-ray of her here
A bit more explanations in my journal .
I've also written a little story to accompany the picture here .

Making of ...
What I used :
- As always, Daz Carrara
- Render engine is Octane
- The dance studio is … “Dance studio” from Daz3d, heavily modified (I completely remade the wall with the windows and changed a lot of the shaders (except the floor) plus a few other things).
- The blond dancer in the background is a V4, the others are based on the genesis 2 model: V6 for Ruth, Kami is “Serena”.
- Outfits are ”Dance Studio Gear” by Predatron & Diane for the V4 and “Leather Body for Genesis 2 Female(s)" by OOT on Renderosity + x7 Materials For G2F Leather Body by x7 (Ruth only) (with modifications), from Renderosity.
I experimented quite a few new techniques on this picture (which explains, in part, why it took me so long
- New base model (genesis 2 (V6) instead of V4)
- To make the “surgery”, I previously used magnets (which I didn't even make). This time I edited directly the 3d mesh of the model (Carrara allows me to do that without breaking the rigging). In fact I almost literally cut and sew the skin (well, delete and weld parts of the mesh). But of course with real surgery there is a lot more than the skin to take care of
- 3D painting/texture editing, to make the scars. I must confess I'm not very pleased with the result, but, well, it was a first so … That explains why they are different from the original. And they are at rather different place, but I had to make them where the “sutures” were… and it wasn't easy to make these at the same place.
- Volumetric lighting (the sun rays).

Great work. Love all the detail and how the light from the window is shown. You outdid yourself on this one. Great storyline also. Excellent work.

Wow ! Thank you very much !
I'm glad you noticed the details. It takes time but I think it's necessary to give life to a picture, it makes it more real, and, in this case, closer to the original character.
I love the sun rays effect too. It's something I've wanted to include in the picture since the beginning. Again, I think it makes the picture more real. It's the reason why I chose windows like these. It took me a lot of time to figure out how to do it and to find the correct setting to make the sun rays visible without making the room foggy. More than ten hours just on this ! But I'm very pleased with the result, and even happier that you liked it too.
I'm glad you also liked the story. I always have a little story in my mind when I work on a scene. It's very basic at the beginning, but it develops along the way, as the picture takes shape. I think it's necessary too to give life to it.
Again, thank you very much for this very nice comment .

I had the idea of a poster when watching the cover of a very old audio tape .
I immediately knew I had to do it. I just kept the picture, clean it up a little and made this .
I added a “special edition” mention but I'm afraid it's not readable on the photograph.
About your question, maybe gamera ? I remember a comment he made about having the song in his mind for the rest of the day .

Hahaha! I LOVE the Ruth Reynolds 'special edition'! That's just great! Very funny and rather sweet too! As if the band had heard of her and done their own little tribute!

Oh my goodness! This is wonderful! You've captured Ruth and Kami beautifully! It's really hard to convey Ruth's character and personality as most of the usual ways of expressing emotion and individuality are missing in her case. But you've done it... her stance and the way she holds herself are perfect! It really is recognisably Ruth. And Kami too is very recognisable too with her expression of love and pride in her partner's abilities.
I love that Ruth is wearing the same leotard she wears in one of the posters for her show! And the tattoo and the small features of her 'lid', are perfect!
As for the whole scene, it's fantastic! I adore the impression that's given that Ruth and Kami are regulars at the studio and that no-one treats them any differently from any of the other dancers any more - the dancer in the background concentrating on her technique as Ruth concentrates on hers in the foreground! I can just picture Ruth rocking herself out onto the floor, impervious to fear of the empty space around her, feeling the polished wood beneath her and enjoying the play of her own muscles and the freedom that her dance gives her... always knowing that Kami will be there. Lovely.
The whole studio looks as if she belongs there and it's her space while she's there. There's even her old poster on the wall! I'd love to think that the other regular users meet up with Ruth and Kami for coffee after their sessions and have learned how to talk to Ruth... just dancers together, and they're admiring of her techniques and skill.
Beautiful, beautiful work, Tom, It's a really great render and I'm hugely flattered that you've taken so much time and trouble on such a lovely tribute to Ruth! Thank you so much!

You're very welcome.
I'm delighted to see I got it right … and that you've seen all I've put in the picture, not only the details but also the atmosphere, the life.
As you say, no one treats them any differently from any other dancer. It's just an ordinary training session. That's the impression I got (what I imagined) from your stories and pictures, and so I tried to put it in this. I'm really glad to see I have succeeded.
As for the time and trouble, well, I surely spent a lot of time to make this, and had to face more than one trouble. But I also had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot of things that will be useful for my next pictures. And, even if it took me a lot more time than I thought, I'm satisfied I managed to to do what I had in mind at the beginning. In fact it's even better !
I'm of course all the more happy, as I said above, to know that you've seen and appreciated all I've put in this picture.
Thank you very much for this very nice comment, but also for creating such marvellous characters .
N.B.: I love the idea of the coffee !

Thank you once again! And I hope the things you learned making this lovely picture will help you when you do more pictures of your characters! I'm still looking forward to meeting Masako!

Yes. What I learned will definitely help.
It's nearly a year now since I told you about Masako... I didn't see the time pass. As usual .
I have worked a little on her, mostly refining her face. I told you her name could change ... it has. I finally decided for a completely different one: 'Misaki' . And I've had one more idea for a scene (there are about 10 now). And, following your advice, she'll not have full length peglegs, probably something like long stubbies.
I'll just make a quick scene for Christmas/New Year, and then I'll focus on Misaki.

That's great news! Misaki sounds wonderful... and great that you've got ideas for 10 scenes for her adventures! Look forward to seeing your new work!
