Description A guy is walking on a sidewalk, strong and knowing it and with a sort of teary look on his face as he stares at his feet in an attempt to make the rest of the world think he’s feeling how he imagines they all want him to: sad and friendless and somehow alone and superior to them like his solitary stride is a choice, like he knows he’s better than them (which he always finds silly, but still the idea sticks in his head: “you’re-better-than-them-and-they-don’t-deserve-you-because-they-are-merely-teenage-twits-that-can’t-see-past-your-cool-hair-and-vintage-clothes) and wants them all to know this not because he is cocky or self-centered or because he actually thinks that of himself, but because isn’t good at rejection and his time is more important than others’ feelings, which he usually spares, so he always ends up spending a half hour making small talk with a girl he once knew but doesn’t anymore (like he is right now, having been halted by a childish smile and a forced hug) and he finds himself drifting away into a place where seeing slight acquaintances on the street makes him happy and isn’t like a chore, and where he can walk like a normal person grinning at the chance classmate that may pass and maybe wave too, (because in that world he wouldn’t be expected to be an icy statue of a boy that is covered by an invisible frost-not really there but that everyone can sense- that makes people back away from his beautiful and frozen self) but he always realizes that he isn’t in that world, and it brings him back to the place where he is being hit on by a girl from his past and has got his cool half-smirk on his face, and where he’s silent but letting his eyes scream, “Get away right now I’ve got better things to do with my time!!!” (the extra exclamation points being so very obvious to the girl), and she ignores the look and his silence and babbles nervously, because she’s not-so-secretly in love with him and is flushed with a sort of lust and neediness and the fear that she’ll be alone forever without him which is ridiculous because she won’t be and she will have moved on in a week, and he knows this and she doesn’t, not yet anyway, and he knows this too so he acts like her pal, sort of, still with that Ice King look on his face but not having the heart to abandon her in her tracks, and he’s trying to signal to her that he wants this conversation to end right now, but she ignores him and keeps bantering about this-or-that band, and he decides to go on with it after a while and learns that when he actually decides to stop being such a prick and listens to peo ple, he’s pretty happy, and he feels like such a teenage cliché to say it but this realization changes his life, and even though he is momentarily without his happy ending he knows he will have it soon.
