Description
Took this macro of some tattoo ink I use at work. It is a very deep red, but looks lighter with the flash. Blew some bubbles and it looks like a caterpillar or cicada shell to me.Related content

For the sake of science I have continued to experiment with tattoo ink bubbles and thought I would share some findings. First off it is a bad idea to use a macro lens if you have to be closer than 16". When these bubbles pop, tiny micro drops of ink go EVERYWHERE. I got lucky, especially with this shot, but other times I was not so lucky. Tattoo inks have a pretty decent surface tension, which means that you can easily blow them into large bubbles and they will stay a bubble for awhile. This can also be a problem due to the first observation. Bigger bubbles, leads to more ink, leads to less surface tension, results in bigger pop, and ultimately larger ink contamination zone. Overall pretty, but a bad idea for macro camera equipment.
