Description
Favorite MMD models Meme - courtesy of *XoriuI've changed some of the catergories; the notes below explain why.
Miku Hatsune: (Mamama) This was tough, but if pressed, I will have no problems going for this version of Miku by Mamama. Runners up would be the versions by Mqdl, Noguma and I am also actually very fond of the Animasa default Miku - probably still the definitive MMD portrayal of Miku.
Luka Megurine: (Nakao) Some really nice ones of Luka available but my personal favorite is still the one by Nakao. Runners up would be the versions by Montecore and Kio.
Rin Kagamine: (Nigamon) I've loved this version of Rin since the first time I saw it.
Meiko: (Nakao) To be honest, I am not a big fan of Meiko, but this version of her is attractive and very appealing. She's sexy in a tasteful way and there is a sporty/contemporary feel to this model.
Gumi Megpoid: (Saboten) It was really hard for me to choose between Saboten's and Mamama's version of Gumi. But if really pressed to choose a fav between these two, Saboten's version wins simply because this version has got "attitude" which suits my (non-standard) portrayal of her character.
Akita Neru: (Nakao) This wasn't hard, the Nakao versions of Neru are all very nice. I like this version probably the most. She's fresh, sexy in a tasteful way and is just a plain nice model. It needed some fixing, but once that's cleared up, the model works very nicely for the skits and other work that I've put her to. I am also very fond of the Animasa Neru even though that version is a little dated by today's standards.
Haku Yowane: (Nakao) This was also a hard choice. I am also very fond of the Animasa version of Haku. However, just from a design standpoint, I really do like Nakao's interpretation of Haku. Sexy, mature and with an air of mystery which suits my view of Haku's character.
Chibi: (Mqdl/Kiyo) Originally this slot was for a purchased model. Since I haven't purchased any I am using this panel to show my all time favorite chibi model. Those of you familiar with my work will know why and if you don't I'll have her explain it to you in detail ...
Other Vocaloid: IA (Mqdl) Simply one of the most beautifully made MMD models, period IMHO.
UTAU: (Sourou) I've not actually worked much with the UTAU characters, but just as a model, this one of Defoko by Sourou is an outstanding piece of 3D modeling work. A close favorite would be ReYaMa's edit of Teto.
Male: (Roadstech) I have a few guy models, all very nice ones. This one (and its variants) I really like. It is an older version of Len, but a very nice one and he doesn't come across as a wimp in this version which I really appreciate.
Touhou: Reimu Hakurei (Knuko) Originally this slot was for an OC, but I don't really collect OCs. However, I do collect Touhou models as generally they are showcase examples of the very best models coming from Japanese modelers. Honestly, I've never played any of the Touhou games nor am I familiar with the characters themselves. That said, just as a work of art, this version of Reimu Hakurei by Knuko is outstanding on all counts. Technically and designwise, easily one of the very best models in my collection.
Anime/Game: Alice (Kakomiki) Need I say more? Beautiful model of a very attractive design. Yes, we all know about her background and that slider, but those withstanding, still an outstanding model in its own right and one that lends itself very well to the skits and videos that I've used her for. She is just plain fun and it's a very attractive looking and well made model.
Edit: Super Sonico (Eto/Makunouti) Can't do a fav list without Super Sonico now can we? Eto's models take some getting used to, to be honest. This one, however, is easy on the eyes and a lot of fun to work with in skits. Her generous proportions just lends itself to comedy. With Makunouti's edit which changes the original black dominitrix costume to a costume that's usually associated with NitroPlus' interpretation of this character, it takes her out of the realm of "kinky" and opens up a lot of possibilities for good clean fun.
Misc: Chibi Append Miku (Tda) Originally this slot was for a ripped model. Personally, I don't support the practice of ripping models from commercial products so I have few if any rips in my collection. Instead I am using this slot for a model that I've loved the moment I first saw her. I will admit, that although I am very impressed by Tda's original full size model of Miku, I also found her "odd", so she doesn't get much mileage in my work. However, the chibi version is just adorable which is why you see her featured a lot in my own works.
Thanks for reading. Thank you *Xoriu for creating this wonderful meme (and the template), it was really enjoyable to revisit with all these models.
Please DO NOT ASK FOR MODEL LINKS; you should be able to find them all listed on *Xoriu 's blog.

Then the use of the template should be self explanatory. There's multiple ways to go around populating it but the easiest way to do it is this:
[1] Create your image of your character.
[2] Make this slightly bigger than one of the frames to be filled.
[3] Insert it into the layer below the frame at the location where you want the picture.
[4] Fit it in so it completely blocks out the frame.
[5] Make a layer mask using the frame layer as the template for the mask.
[4] Then hide or delete the frame layer and it'll be a perfect fit.

Don't ask, I don't know where that came from either...
That said, WOW you really like Nakao's moels. O_O

I like simple no nonsense, functional models with no unreasonable restrictions attached to them.

A fave modeler of you too judging from the bases that many of the PTX Girls have.

to a point. So many motions are based on Lat models. So arms crashing thru the chest area has become a major obsticle to overcome when trying to fix glitches.

Nakao's breast physics ... some of them do need a slight reduction in the volume of the spheres as the tolerences are too tight. As for Eto's models (eg. Super Sonico); easier to just change the motion ><.

GM34 In reply to Trackdancer [2013-01-20 02:44:35 +0000 UTC]
In some cases, I can change the motion for one and it's good for 7 others. ( if they all do the same thing). otherwise I found that if I follow the camera frames, I can adjust each dancer per that sequence when multiple motions are needed.

Trackdancer In reply to GM34 [2013-01-20 02:55:58 +0000 UTC]
You do know that you can use the same trick that I use for chibis ([link] ) to fix motions right? Still may need some minor corrections for arms thru mammary glands, but it'll take care of a lot of other issues.
(With adults/full size models, usually a slight tweak to the angle ratios is all that's usually necessary. Shouldn't need to mess with the position ratios).

Hm... You're one of the rare MMD users who prefer Nakao and Animasa models to other more detailed models. I like you for that; simplicity is the best.
That adult Len model looks nice. I should consider downloading him.
Btw, I always thought it'd be better if you posed the fingers (the pose for Chibi IA irks me because of that.) Even just moving them a bit can make a huge difference.

I am a big believer in the KISS principle.
Ohhh ... I didn't notice I forgot about the fingers in Chibi IA's pose; with 15 models to do in sequence, it's kind of easy to slip up sometimes.

I like Nakao's work because:
1/. They are technically competent. Some of his earlier versions have "issues", but all are of these are fairly easily addressed.
2/. He doesn't get fancy with the technical aspects. Which means that his models tend to work flawlessly and are not a huge drain on system resources. This is important for me as my laptops getting dated (it's going on 7 years old).
3/. His models have clean designs with good flowing lines. Pleasing to look at and although like all anime females they are distorted, he does so in a manner that makes them still look 'natural'.
4/. All his models can take almost any MME effect without issues, which is important to me.
Are there better models out there. Absolutely, but for a handful (such as some of the ones in the meme above), few satisfy all the criteria I've outlined above.
For me, how well a model works is just as important as how well it looks. I have some very good looking models in my collection which are functional fails as they try to incorporate too much crap. Nakao's models don't have these issues.
