Description 2022 update: Please note the submission date. This is a COMPLICATED way to do basic shadows!

I figured I would probably upload something like this. It's actually a really easy way to do stuff.

Details on step 3:
If you select the magic wand tool and highlight most of what you want, you get that stupid little space between your lineart and the selection area. You can get rid of that by clicking "select" then going down to "grow" or in some cases, "shrink." The boxes that appear on the pop up indicate how many pixels, ect. you want to add or take away around the boarder of your selection. As long as your colors are underneath your lineart, it shouldn't matter if you intersect with the lines at all.

Thanks for posting this. I'll have to give it a try. Funny thing is, I've had GIMP for a while but only recently figured out how to use it while making new tank skins for world of tanks (Using a lot of these techniques funnily enough), but I never made the connection that I could use it for pictures so I kept struggling on with paint...

Not a problem. I figure the easiest way to figure out GIMP is to play with it for a while. Linearts around here make great templates to practice coloring on them too.

GIMP is a great program, and it's my digital art program of choice. I highly reccommend trying it out for pictures

I have a picture I've been working on and off on in paint that I must have spent tens of hours on by now and its still no good. Might import it into GIMP and see what I can do

I would try it on GIMP. With the layers system, shading makes it so much easier, and you can add textures and effects to the drawing as well. I would recommend looking around for tutorials on GIMP if you haven't already

Interesting technique. I've always used a layer mask style. I ought to try some different things out.
