Description
This civlization was created for the Worldcraft contest #5. I planned a basic redesign of the 'pitch black' creatures but I quickly realized I was developing something to different to be that. Had several ideas and this one came to be the best."The demdae (or demdaea, for plural use) civilization developed near the end of the stelliferous (star-filled) universe. As the cosmos is more abundant in heavier atoms, their's is a boron-based biology. They evolved form tetralaterally-symetrical creatures with powerful tails on top of their bodies. Demdaea are now tripedal beings with two forelegs and a supportive hindleg derived of their tails. The two remaining appendages have become sensory/manipulative extrematies. The lower arm was a display organ with rpid movements. The upper arm was equipped with four digits, a central ganglia, and display wattles and membranic photoreceptors. There is a second ganglia within the dorsal plates of their skeleton, between their forelegs. This gives them a sort of 'two-faced' personality; a basic set of primal urges, and a higher consciousness of more developed ethics. These two minds intimatly overlap eachother in society.
Demdaea developed a highy advanced civilization within their home system. They never expanded any further, since stars were an increasingly rare sight in their age. After mellenia of peaceful development, their society drifted into isolationism, distrust, ethical breakups, economic fall, and eventually massive civil war. One population on a teraformed world was marooned without ships and forced into hiding. They excavated enormous caverns sheilded from scanning radiation. In this act, thy unknowingly created an ark of sorts for what would become the last remnants of their kind. Enemy factions disrupted their star, making it more unstable with frequent blasts of heat and radiation. Others moved the ark-world closer to the star in hopes of roasting off any survivors. But the now-violent star and crippling wars doomed all other demdae cultures in the system. It is believed a genetically-enhanced super-virus was the final blow to the other demdaea. The survivors of the ark-world developed into a newly stable society within their artificial caves. Their world had been robbed of most metals, so mining is of primary consequence. They have had to adapt themselves to their dark home. The lower arm, once a rapid visual display, is now a long whip-like antenae for feeling around. Their photoreceptors, derived from digits, have been modified into echolocator-organs. Their four manipulative digits now posess carapeice-like pads at the fingertips to enhance their snapping ability, which is now their main method of communiation.
The elite classes of demdae society had recently established the first permanent domed settlements on the scorched surface in several centeries when the nexus opened, freeing them to explore the universe.

Oh, see it's...Β uhhh.... hmmm....Β Crap, I think I just realized I don't really know!Β Maybe I thought of it when I was drawing it but forgot to mention it, or maybe I forgot to consider that at all.Β Oh well, if I had to guess, I'd say it's probably in the "palm" of their "head", derived from one of their feet.
... Or perhaps they've self-modified themselves to the point where they don't need a mouth anymore... however that would work.Β Thanks for pointing that out!Β Β Very interesting...Β

Hand for head much? I see what you did there!

I used my own hand as a model (couldn't have used anyone else's). (smile)

Well nothing against that! The result looks pretty "alien"!

very well thought out. it would be really neat to watch a few demdaea interact.

I imagine it would include much twitching and jerking motions of the head and antenae, accompanyed by clicks and stemming of the hand and sonoreceptors.
Perhaps something resembling a cross between the mating dance of blue-footed boobies and an antibacterial contest of rock-paper-sissors.

Really awesome design, even if I didn't understand most of the description!!

This is very nice, I am quite fond of the back story... the age old story of the societal colapse of boron based life forms...
ease excuse me for the reference... but, I would advise them not to enter the nexus... it was responsible for Kirk's death... twice! (allbeit, the first time, he did not actually die...)
I would however, like to know more about how this nexus works in your Iuniverse, is ti some sort of wormhole system spread throughout the nearly starless universe, connecting the few planetary systems left?
oh, another interesting idea for such a starless universe would be to have civilizations basdstarless, rougue planets; they would propell entire planets for use as ships, living within caverns smilar to those constructed by the demdae here, perhaps even conquering other rougue planets to incoperate onto their own, creating massive vessles of unprescendeted scale out of the shells of hunderds of planets... of course, a race such as that would need to remain stable for millions of years in order to track down, aquest sand incorporate so many planets...

Thanks, quite! Now lets not antagonize the borons due to their place at the edge of the stelliferous universe. Those who develop around stars are prone to greater possibilities of unstability over time, but that's just the location.
Pardon my unaquatence with the series (the original at least), but what is Star Trek's "nexus"? I have acually seen the word 'nexus' used as several definitions in relation to several concepts.
You are correct in that my definition of 'nexus' for iUniverse is a wormhole system. Its a Hugely important factor in my fictional universe, the nexus is what makes universal civilization possible. These wormholes are of such nature as one may tranverse the full diameter of the stelliferous universe in a few decades (a bit of a streach on real wormhole capabilities, I'm willing to bet). This makes for grand opportunities for massively scaled scifi stories and space operas for the imagination. There are several types of wormholes. The smallest and most compact ones are used for communication via gamma beams; these are interpreted by translation boxes at opposite ends of each wormhole and retransmitted as radio waves for internet systems. Larger wormholes are available to passengers and cargo. They must be placed some distance away from any planet or star due to gravitational disruption, and their are often large crowds waiting their appointed turn through, so getting to the holes can be quite the experience. The intergalactic wormholes are often positioned in orbit around the super-massive blackhole of a galaxy. The ships going through these holes are often worldships designed to be inhabited for years because that's how long intergalactic wormhole travel may be. There may be rest stops positioned within these wormholes as well.
Hmmm, yes, that would make a good concept. I have imagined life on pyloids before, so it is not hard to imagine some in the outer dark era. I have read theories on how to move starsas well, so they could move their whole star system. It would be cool to see an organizd star-system constellation fleet! I have also imagined fleets of planets before as well. My first inspiration for organizing planetary formations was probably Larry Niven's 'Fleet of Worlds'. Anyway, the only stars left at a certain point would be red dwarfs, and brown dwarfs. Brown dwarf life is still of great mystery and increasing facination to me. According to one of my sources, a brown dwarf 10 times the mass of Jupiter would be warm enoughf for liquid water, and of course there may be smaller brown dwarfs with ammonia, methane, or any number of cold life solvents.

HAHA-that's funny! The icon, I mean, which appeared in corespondance to your word of llamas and camels. Thanks, I drew this for worldcraft's fifth contest.
