Description
With the quest for the Dark Heart fragments underway, Howel, Howelle and Foxo leave Roguetown and head towards Chilltop Mountains. As they follow the road through Roguetown Outskirts, they run into a terrified fox, who is barely able to stammer that Cozy Cape has been attacked, before a Vulchew appears out of nowhere and snatches him up in its claws before carrying him away. The pups try to give chase but the Vulchew is easily able to out-fly them and they quickly lose track of it. Cozy Cape is where the foxes not under Sally's "protection" live safely away from Gloomwood Forests, and Howelle asks why anyone would attack it. Foxo cannot think of a conceivable reason, but states that the Vulchew headed in the direction of Cozy Cape with the captive fox in tow. Maybe they can investigate and see if they can find any witnesses. With this, they head for Cozy Cape.Upon arriving, the cape has been devastated, with the assorted huts broken open and destroyed in various ways, with KO'd foxes sprawled around everywhere. Before the pups can get a grasp on the situation, they are attacked out of nowhere by a pair of seemingly-enraged foxes. At the beginning of a battle, foxes will bring out several bushes and spread them out across the battlefield before jumping into one. Jumping on a bush does not affect it, and they must be destroyed by other means, such as hammer counters, to reveal the fox inside. However, while the pups are in a menu there is a chance that a fox will quickly jump to another bush to try and do so without drawing their attention. Foxes can attack by moving themselves (in the bush) and another bush in front of the pups before charging, requiring any pup being targeted by a real fox to hit them away with a hammer counter. Empty bushes will simply phase harmlessly through their target. All foxes in the battle will cooperate and pool their bushes, meaning the pups can both be attacked by foxes, or they can both be "attacked" by empty bushes. Only two bushes will attack at once. If a pup is hit by this attack, they can trip and take a small amount of stress. If there are no bushes in the battle on a fox's turn, they will replenish bushes similarly to how they initiate a battle. First strikes can hit foxes before they hide in these bushes.
After defeating the foxes, one of them is KO'd while the other regains consciousness, confused and seemingly unaware of what is going on, showing surprise that the cape has been attacked. The pups ask them if they remember anything, and the fox is about to answer when the Vulchew returns and grabs them before flying away again, leaving the pups down one witness. However, they are able to spot the Vulchew dropping the fox off in some kind of large nest in the distance, and the pups decide to head in that direction. Something strange is definitely going on here, and the nest is their best place to find answers. As they explore Cozy Cape, they continue to encounter foxes, as well as Foxelenos.
Foxelenos are similar to regular Selenos, in that they trade attack power for durability. They attack by cloning themselves before charging at the pups. However, one of them will be missing either their tail or their tuft of hair, indicating that they are fake. While the real Foxeleno will charge at their target, requiring them to jump over or on them to avoid or counter, the fake Foxeleno will instead jump over their target, requiring that pup to not jump to avoid being hit. If this attack hits, it can trip a hit pup as well as dealing them a small amount of stress. Alternatively, Foxelenos can attack by jumping into a bush and charging at one of them pups, requiring them to hit them back with a hammer counter. This will repeat several times, with each hammer hit slightly damaging the bush until it collapses, and the next swing hits the Foxeleno, ending the attack. This attack deals a small amount of stress if it hits.
Several times, the pups are able to find foxes that do not attack them, but each time the Vulchew will appear, sometimes immediately flying off with the fox, but other times it struggles to carry them away, giving the pups the opportunity to initiate a boss battle with it, where Foxo can tattle its stats as usual. However, they find that it is extremely resistant to damage, and they are unable to sufficiently damage it before it simply disengages and flies away. In the process of heading towards the nest, they come across a thick line of vegetation that blocks their path, leaving them unable to process. Exploring the area, they find a strange crystalline object dropped by one of the foxes taken by the Vulchew, and Foxo identifies it as a Fire Heart, wondering how it ended up here. Howel explains that foxes are a constant bother in Gloomwood Forests, and it was likely found and taken by the fox back to Cozy Cape. Foxo states that they can make use of it, learning the Fire Heart special attack, which involves the initiating pup forming a large fireball above their sibling, who must then hit the fireball at the targeted enemy with their hammer. Using this, they engage the wall of vegetation in a "boss battle", where it has extreme resistance to all forms of non-fire damage, requiring the pups to use the Fire Heart attack to "defeat" it, gaining a minuscule amount of EXP in the process.
Foxo wonders why they had to over-dramatise the whole ordeal, and they move on. As they do so, they find that the flames they created have somehow sprouted into Burns, which become a new enemy type they encounter in the area. Burns are immune to contact damage, such as jumps, and are healed by fire damage, meaning the pups must hit them with non-contact attacks, such as hammers or their ball attacks. They attack by rolling at one of the pups, requiring them to jump over the Burn to avoid it. Landing on it or being hit can deal the 'Burning' status effect, as well as a large amount of stress to the afflicted pup, which in turn deals a small amount of stress to the other pup. Alternatively, they can spit fireballs at the pups, requiring them to hit the fireballs away with hammer counters. This attack can also deal the 'Burning' status effect, and deals a small amount of stress to a hit pup.
Eventually, the pups are able to make it to the nest, and climb inside to find the various kidnapped foxes, all KO'd and spread out across the nest. Just as they go to investigate the closest fox, the Vulchew reveals itself from behind the nest, and with an ear-piercing shriek swoops at them, initiating a battle...
