Description
With Wendy blocking their path, the pups prepare for their first real fight. As the first true boss of the story, Wendy does not have any particularly difficult tricks or gimmicks in battle, but she serves as an introduction to the significant effects boss fights can have on Anxiety. Since bosses are significantly tougher and more powerful than standard enemies, their battles go on for much longer, meaning the pups must manage their Anxiety for longer. Additionally, their attacks are more spectacular and terrifying, so they will be dealing significantly more stress. Wendy has several attacks.
Her first attack is to extend her antlers out sideways and angle her head forward before charging at the pups, requiring anyone in the way to jump over the antlers to avoid being hit. If Wendy keeps her head straight, both of the pups will be targeted, although if she holds her head up high then the antlers will go over the pups, requiring them to not jump to avoid them. Sometimes, Wendy will angle her head to either side, meaning one antler will be higher than the other. In this case, the pup in line with the lower antler must jump while the other must not jump. This attack deals a decent amount of stress to both pups, dealing slightly more to a pup if they are hit.
Her second attack is to form a ball of energy above her head using her antlers, before firing sweeping beams at the pups, requiring them to jump over the beams as they pass. Wendy will sweep the beam up and down the screen several times, requiring the pups to both jump over it in quick succession, with their order based on where the beam is. This attack deals a minor amount of stress each time the beam passes a pup. Later in the battle, the attack will last longer, increasing the amount of stress it deals.
Her third attack is to clone herself, then have the clone position itself behind the pups. Both of them will then point their antlers at the pups and begin firing a single energy bolt between the tips of their antlers, requiring any pups in the way to jump over the bolt to avoid it. Sometimes, one of the Wendys will fire a bolt between the tips of its antlers, meaning a pup will not be targeted. As this attack progresses, the bolts will gradually fire faster. This attack deals a minor amount of stress whenever a bolt is fired at a pup. Later in the battle, the attack will last longer, increasing the amount of stress it can deal as there are more opportunities for the pups to be fired at.
Once Wendy is defeated, Howel demands to know where she came from and who sent her. When she refuses to answer, Foxo backs up the pups, assuring her that they'll happily beat her up again. With this Wendy gives them a piece of advice: When you're trying to interrogate someone, make sure they can't teleport first. Foxo and the pups are momentarily confused, before Wendy demonstrates her point by teleporting away to places unknown, which Foxo admits he should've seen coming. Regardless, the road is clear, and the pups are able to leave Gloomwood Forests.
Time for the first REAL boss for the pups to face. Wendy is a pretty simple boss to fight, as is normal for (real) first bosses. However, she deals considerably more stress than the basic grunts the pups have been fighting so far, and given how low the pups ANX stats will be this early on, she can make them panic quite easily, especially with her array of attacks. This is one of the new things in ATOTP, where the Anxiety stat is in itself a gimmick that bosses can make use of in rather interesting ways, as we'll see...
