Description
Discovering that the pups have intruded on its nest, the returning Vulchew engages them in battle. The Vulchew, Squawky, is initially extremely resistant to damage. Combined with the fact that he flies, the pups' options for dealing damage are initially limited. However, Squawky has a second HP pool that Foxo cannot tattle; on his wings. These can only be damaged by fire, such as the pups' recently learnt Fire Heart special attack. If they can 'KO' the wings, Squawky will be set alight and most of his organic matter will be incinerated, leaving him as a pile of bones with the head mounted on top. In this state he is vulnerable to damage as normal for a short period, and he cannot attack. After this time has passed, his organic matter will regenerate and the pups will have to repeat the process. Later in the battle, Squawky gains a second attack turn. Squawky has several attacks.
His first attack is to fly up into the air and briefly glance at one of the pups before rapidly diving down at them, requiring the targeted pup to quickly hit him away with a hammer counter. This attack deals a small amount of stress if it hits. As the battle progresses, Squawky will gradually dive more times per attack, and the attack will not end if it hits one of the pups. Later in the battle, Squawky will dive faster, and this attack can trip if it hits.
His second attack is to catch a gust of wind and fly high up into the top screen before gradually floating back down, moving forwards and backwards back down towards the pups, before he flies at them with his wings stretched out. Since he flies between the two pups, they must both jump over his wings at the same time to avoid the attack. If they land on the wings, they will be hit. This attack deals an average amount of stress, dealing slightly more if it hits. Later in the battle, this attack is faster, and Squawky can tip to one side before attacking. The pup he angles towards must jump as normal, but the other pup must not jump, otherwise they will jump into his wing and be hit.
His third attack is to turn around and lay an egg, which will crack upon hitting the ground and reveal a Boom, which will in turn bounce at one of the pups, requiring them to hit it upwards with a hammer counter, hitting it to the other pup who must in turn hit it back at them. Each time the Boom is hit, it will fall faster and from a lower height, until it either hits one of the pups and explodes, or the second pup hits it back at Squawky, causing it to explode on him, damaging him instead. This attack deals a tiny amount of stress with each hammer hit, and deals a high amount of stress to a pup who is hit. Additionally, if it does so, it can also deal that pup the 'Dizzy' status effect.
His fourth attack is dig into the floor of the nest and begin pulling various items out and throwing them at the pups, requiring them to respond in different ways based on the item. If he throws a spike ball, it will roll along the ground, requiring the targeted pup to jump over it as it passes. Landing on it will cause them to be hit. If he throws a fox, it will bounce along the ground, requiring the targeted pup to hit it away with a hammer counter. If he throws an egg, it will bounce along the ground in higher arcs, causing it to bounce over the targeted pup, requiring them to not jump to avoid it. If this attack hits, it deals an average amount of stress.
Once Squawky is defeated, he also appears confused and takes a moment to realise what is happening. He takes a look as Foxo and the pups, understands what has just happened, and thanks them for 'freeing' him. The pups are about to ask him what he means when he promptly keels over and dies, causing the pups to absolutely freak out about how they didn't mean to kill him. They are about to leave when a faint light begins shining from inside Squawky's ribcage, causing the pups to turn around just as he explodes into a bright flash of light. Once the light has receded, Squawky is apparently alive and well again, and explains in his somewhat limited grammatical capabilities that as mistress Leslie's pet Vulchew, he has been enchanted with the ability to effectively never die.
The pups are about to ask him what he means when Foxo abruptly interrupts them, asking Squawky if he means Leslie as in the "shapeshifter". Squawky confirms his suspicions, and Foxo declares that they have to go and see her, as it is extremely important, although he does not divulge exactly why. Howelle manages to stop a hurried Foxo and asks him what is going to happen with the foxes they have rescued, not to mention the Dark Heart. Foxo tells her that the foxes will need to lay low, as this mysterious Leslie figure can apparently provide temporary protection for them. Still unsure of what Foxo is talking about, the pups decide to follow him and Squawky, as they lead them to the dark and gloomy Twilight Trail...
Status effects, more than three attacks, the second attack turn later in the battle... We're getting into the thick of it now. Squawky is unusual, in that as a boss fight he doesn't really stand out much. However, his thing is that you fight him several times throughout Cozy Cape before the real thing. This time however, you have the ability to make fire, and fire has the ability to unmake Squawky's wings. Then he's totally vulnerable for a bit, so it's effectively a hard counter to a boss that otherwise has a history of running away.
Also squawk is a word I didn't really think about how it was spelt until I needed to type it. It really sounds like the 'w' should be at the beginning and not the end, where it sounds like there should be an 'r' in there somewhere. Weird...
