Description
With the pearl shattered beyond repair and an angry Mermaiden bearing down on them, the duo prepare for an unexpected fight.Being of an easily-angered species, the Mermaiden is susceptible to becoming enraged during battle. Should the Mermaiden take enough damage in a short enough time, or receive enough individual hits in a short enough time, the Mermaiden will become temporarily enraged, gaining the 'POW-Up' status effect, an additional attack turn, and changing some of her attacks for the duration of the effect. Additional attacks cannot stack this effect however. Later in the battle, the Mermaiden can enter this effect more easily, and the changes to her attacks become default. The Mermaiden has several attacks.
Her first attack is to 'sing' out a sweeping beam of pure sound, which she will quickly move up and down the screen, requiring the duo to jump over it as it passes. If a character is hit by the beam, they have a very high chance of suffering the 'Dizzy' status effect, and unlike most other attacks, being hit again will not remove the effect. Later in the battle, or when the Mermaiden is enraged, she will sweep the beam faster and will often stop between the duo and change direction, potentially several times in a single attack.
Her second attack is to quickly swim in circles, building up speed before rapidly rushing at one of the duo, requiring them to jump over or on her to avoid or counter respectively. A clockwise direction indicates Selena, and an anti-clockwise direction indicates Present Night Guard. If they do not, she will grab them and swim off with them, reappearing in the top right of the top screen. She will then kiss the grabbed character, leeching HP and the 'STAT-Down' status effect, before throwing them at the other character, requiring them to jump over them. Jumping on them will damage the thrown character, and being hit by them can trip. Later in the battle, or when the Mermaiden is enraged, she will also deal the 'Poisoned' status effect with the kiss, and the thrown character will travel faster.
Her third attack is to swim in a loop in the top screen, before quickly rushing at one of the duo, requiring them to deflect her away with a hammer counter. If she spins clockwise in the loop, Selena is the target, and Present Night Guard if she spins anti-clockwise. If a character is hit, they will take heavy damage and be sent flying. Later in the battle, or when the Mermaiden is enraged, she will attack multiple times, and being hit will deal slightly more damage, as well as possibly tripping the target if she hits (although they will not be sent flying if this happens, possibly leaving them open to a second hit).
Her fourth attack is to bring out a heavy pearl and bat it at one of the duo with her tail, requiring the target to hit it back at her with a hammer counter. This begins a back-and-forth, where she and the duo hit the pearl back at each other until either one of the duo is hit, or the pearl shatters, ending the attack. She does not alternate between the duo, and her target is random each time, and the pearl will travel faster with each hit. If the pearl hits, it can deal the 'Dizzy' status effect. Later in the battle, or if the Mermaiden is enraged, the pearl will take more hits to break.
Once the Mermaiden is defeated, Present Night Guard states that she can probably make something nice out of the shards of the broken pearl. The Mermaiden hesitantly agrees, and states that she only really likes fish anyway, and takes the duo to Roguetown Port.
Welp, the Mermaiden battle is up next, and nothing much has changed, aside from a couple of her attacks. The swimming loop attack is now countered with the hammer instead of jumping, and can send you flying or trip you (then send you flying after that). Her kiss grab attack is also slightly different, as she now takes that character into the top screen and yeets them at their compatriot.
And oh my, that angry sprite...
