Description
Having refused Wendy's demands for the Dark Heart shard, the pups prepare to fight her for it.Aside from her significantly improved stats, there is not much different about Wendy than the pups' previous encounter with her. However, there is one significant change, in that the pups do not have Foxo at their disposal, meaning he cannot track Wendy's or their stats, making the fight something of a guessing game. The pups must rely on more subtle indicators of their stats, such as switching to low-HP idle animations or being blocked out of their special attacks due to Anxiety thresholds. This also means that they cannot tattle Wendy, but unlike previous similar fights this is a fight they must win to continue the story. Wendy has several attacks, and gains a second attack turn later in the battle.
Her first attack is to extend her antlers out sideways and angle her head forward before charging at the pups, requiring anyone in the way to jump over the antlers to avoid being hit. If Wendy keeps her head straight, both of the pups will be targeted, although if she holds her head up high then the antlers will go over the pups, requiring them to not jump to avoid them. Sometimes, Wendy will angle her head to either side, meaning one antler will be higher than the other. In this case, the pup in line with the lower antler must jump while the other must not jump. This attack deals a small amount of stress to both pups, dealing a large amount more to a pup if they are hit. This attack is now faster, can trip a hit pup, and later in the battle Wendy will screen-wrap after attacking and charge in from the right, repeating the attack and possibly tilting her head to change her attack profile. When her HP gets very low, she can even repeat the attack a third time, getting faster with each charge.
Her second attack is to form a ball of energy above her head using her antlers, before firing sweeping beams at the pups, requiring them to jump over the beams as they pass. Wendy will sweep the beam up and down the screen several times, requiring the pups to both jump over it in quick succession, with their order based on where the beam is. This attack deals a decent amount of stress each time the beam hits a pup. This attack now lasts longer, and Wendy will begin to move the beam more erratically, sometimes swapping directions in between the pups or changing speeds. Additionally, it can now deal the 'DEF-Down' status effect. Later in the battle, the attack will last even longer, and Wendy will start sweeping two beams simultaneously.
Her third attack is to clone herself, then have the clone position itself behind the pups. Both of them will then point their antlers at the pups and begin firing a single energy bolt between the tips of their antlers, requiring any pups in the way to jump over the bolt to avoid it. Sometimes, one of the Wendys will fire a bolt between the tips of its antlers, meaning a pup will not be targeted. As this attack progresses, the bolts will gradually fire faster. This attack deals a decent amount of stress whenever a bolt hits a pup. This attack now lasts longer and the bolts have a higher maximum speed. Later in the battle, the attack will last even longer, and the bolts can now deal the 'STAT-Down' status effect.
Her fourth attack is to create a pair of glass cages around the pups, requiring them to repeatedly jump to gradually crack and eventually smash the cages to free themselves. Meanwhile, Wendy will be charging up a massive blast using her antlers, which she will eventually release as an antler-shaped wave at the pups, requiring them to jump over the blast to avoid it. If a pup is unable to break the cage in time, they will be unable to clear the blast and be hit by it. This attack deals a small amount of stress, and if the blast hits it deals heavy damage and a large amount of stress, as well as possibly inflicting the 'POW-Down' status effect in the process. Later in the battle, Wendy will charge the magic blast up faster, giving the pups less time to escape.
Her fifth attack is for her eyes to open to their maximum width and glow an eerie green, before chunks of rock start being pulled from the ceiling to levitate around her. The rocks will then disintegrate partially and form into various shapes, before Wendy launches them at the pups, requiring them to react different based on the shapes of the rocks being launched at them. Rocks on Wendy's right will be launched at Howel, and rocks on her left will be launched at Howelle. If a rock is turned into a blade, it will be launched directly at the targeted pup, requiring them to jump over the rock to avoid it. Cubes will bounce along the ground towards the pups, eventually bouncing over them, requiring them to not jump to avoid being hit. Hammers will be launched upwards in an arc, falling on the pups and requiring the target to smash it with a hammer counter. Blades and cubes can trip if they hit, while hammers can inflict the 'Dizzy' status effect if they hit. This attack deals a small amount of stress, and deals a decent amount of stress each time it hits a pup.
Once Wendy is defeated, she will admit that the pups are stronger than they were last time, even without the help of their precious fox friend, and that they might even serve her purposes nicely. The pups briefly consider questioning her on the subject, but ask her if she is going to teleport away to avoid interrogation again. Wendy praises them for their insight, before teleporting away. Foxo remarks that he can't be blamed for not seeing that one coming, since he can't see all that much right now anyway, and hurries the pups onward...
Honestly, did you really think that a character taking up half the poster would be relegated to a puny first boss? Pfft. Wendy puts on much more of a show here, but the real gimmick is that the pups are basically fighting blind here. They can't see any stats at all, but unlike the previous Sally and Carrie bosses where Foxo shows up to bail them out eventually, they have to stick with it this time and win. Wendy makes this difficult to say the least, with an expanded array of attacks and substantial power boosts to her existing ones.
As to why Wendy's stats are listed even though they are hidden to the pups (like Sally and Carrie's stats), I initially chose Wendy as the Chilltop Caverns boss because she had previously been fought (and probably tattled). However, I then read how tattling works, and remembered that tattled stats are hidden if Foxo is unavailable. Given that he's currently inside Howelle, he's basically unavailable, despite being present. Anyway, the difference between Wendy and Sally and Carrie is that the pups are meant to win this one, rather than being bailed out/told to run away.
