Description
Following the unmistakable trail of the Dark Emerald with Shepa's help, the duo enter the Consumption Chamber to find and deal with the Dark Emerald. Upon entering, the area suddenly freezes, with Shepa noting that the water Dobinxette is drinking must be freezing cold if it's helping with her heartburn. Upon continuing, the duo quickly discover that when the area is frozen, the ground becomes slippery and certain objects freeze up. For example, watery substances freeze into solid objects, while flames and other sources of heat are doused. Using this, the duo are able to navigate the area in unusual ways. On the flip-side, ground based enemies have trouble moving around when the ground is frozen, which also changes some of their attacks. As they explore the area, they encounter several new enemy types.Dark Anuu are the first new enemy type, and although they appear to be dark copies of regular Anuu, they behave quite different. They can attack by firing their eye lasers, but beforehand they will teleport around at random before gradually slowing down and stopping in front of their target/s before quickly firing, requiring anyone in the way to jump. If a character is hit, they can suffer the 'SPD-Down' status effect and have a small chance to trip. They can also attack by attempting to ram into one of the duo, requiring the target to jump over or on them to dodge or counter respectively. However, the Dark Anu will teleport around at random, either reversing its progress, teleporting in line with the other character or even teleporting above the target, causing it to fall on them and requiring them to hit it away with a hammer counter. If a character is rammed, they can trip, and if the Dark Anu falls on them, they can suffer the 'Dizzy' status effect. If the area is frozen, the Dark Anu will take longer to build up speed, and after teleporting it will sometimes stumble and slip briefly before regaining its footing, disrupting its momentum.
Dark Selenos are another new enemy type, and are a dark copy of regular Selenos. It can attack with the usual ram attack, which must be jumped on to counter. Jumping over it has no effect aside from avoiding damage, as the attack will simply loop endlessly until it is jumped on. It will frequently teleport around at random, either reversing its progress, teleporting in line with the other character or both. If a character is hit, they can trip, and this does not end the attack, meaning it can chain a number of hits for significant damage. Additionally, for most of this attack, it will angle its ears up, counting it as Spiky while it does so and forcing the duo to jump over it until it lowers its ears. Alternatively, the Dark Seleno will rapidly spin around and move around the duo in a ring, requiring one of them to hit it away with a hammer counter, otherwise it will gradually get faster until it rams through both of the duo, sending them flying and tripping them upon landing, as well as possibly dealing them the 'Poisoned' status effect. If the area is frozen, the Dark Seleno will take longer to build speed, but has a higher maximum speed before it attacks.
Dark Synipers are, perhaps obviously at this point, dark copies of the previous Syniper enemy. Their attacks are faster and can deal 'STAT-Down' instead of just 'DEF-Down' as well as 'Poisoned'. However, they also have the unique ability to split in two when damaged, halving its remaining HP between the two copies in the process. This means a high-power opening attack should be used, then the copies can be mopped up with a multi-hit attack. Two copies can coordinate and attack at the same time, with one copy targeting each of the duo and requiring them to read two telegraphs at the same time.
Anughouls are a completely new enemy type and are the most powerful regular enemies the duo will face. Uniquely, while they do not count as flying, they float just above the ground, making them specifically immune to the Snack Heart special attack as well as the AoE effects of the Mighty Meteorite special attack (although direct hits can still damage them). Anughouls can attack by rolling into one of the duo, requiring the target to hit them away with a hammer counter. However, the Anughoul will turn invisible mid-attack to try and throw the target off. Sometimes, it will split in two and attack both of the duo, either simultaneously or in quick succession. If this attack hits, it can trip as well as deal the 'Poisoned' status effect. Alternatively, Anughouls can split into four clouds and either float into the duo in a line, requiring them to jump over the clouds, or circle around the duo before ramming into them at random, requiring them to destroy the clouds with hammer counters (although this does not damage the Anughoul). If a character is touched by a cloud in any way, they can suffer the 'POW-Down' and 'Poisoned' status effects.
Eventually, the duo reach the very depths of the Consumption Chamber, where not even the freezing cold from the water can penetrate, where they encounter Anubelle, perfectly normal and in her regular form. For a moment, the duo are confused before remembering what previously happened to Anubelle, and the Dark Emerald admits that it didn't expect them to fall for that, before promptly repossessing Anubelle. However, instead of transforming into Dark Anubelle, it reverts to its true form, and prepares to start on a whole "I've been expecting you" speech before realising it hasn't planned the whole thing through. Shepa demands to know when the Dark Emerald is going to fight, and it retorts that it was getting to that part. Calling Shepa a "poor sport" and having "no appreciation for drama and suspense", the Dark Emerald prepares to battle the duo...
