Description
Utility Box2 (of 2, so far)I learned about the utility box painting project happening around our town, and I felt compelled to jump at the opportunity! I spoke with the Superintendent of our county school's office, about the idea of an education theme for the utility box on the corner of Myrtle and West. He pointed me to the school on the corner nearby, and through a combined efforts of county schools, and this school nearby's staff, I was connected with an aspiring art student, Sevion R. He was excited to be offered the opportunity to get his foot into the art world, and as I explained the project, and showed him the design, his enthusiasm grew exponentially.
Sevion and I worked as a team for two weeks, rendering concepts from pages in a binder, to full-sized paintings surrounding 8 sides of two utility boxes attached by a pipe. Due to time constraints, I had to create a concept for the approval of the Arts Council while a student was being sought out. While I was designing this scene, I had not realized the top of the smaller box was visible to anyone walking by, and amidst priming the boxes, I found our project lacking a design for an unexpected 9th panel. I asked Sevion to come up with his own design to cover the top of the box that coincided with the theme already in existence - a student daydreaming of potential careers one needs an education to obtain. Sevion opted to include photography - a perfect profession to be included in this montage of careers.
The overall theme is that of a student, to which you cannot see a gender or an ethnicity, that has fallen into a daydream of careers, all of which require a higher education to obtain. Careers aimed to include skilled professions of the immediate businesses, and then others relevant to our local environment; firefighter, chef, dentist, electrician, information technology technician, composer, police officer, farmer, engineer, chemist, astronomer, and wonderfully added, photographer.
Sevion completed the project feeling energized about the whole process, and intends to continue his efforts in all the realms of the art world. Sevion and I spoke several times between hours of painting, about music and art, sharing our inspirations, conversing about those that showed interest in us, and inspired us to keep pursuing our passions. He said to me, "I've always aspired to be a great musician, for as long as I can remember its been a huge part of my life. Working on this box has really showed me how much I love art." Sevion is looking forward to future endeavors and aims to keep reappearing in the art scene in our County's future!
