Description
Tommy Richardsen // Facebook // 500px Β // InstagramGot a few images that was not sharp due to the strong winds on the mountain, at -14Β° C I started to feel it after a few hours.
This area has a lot cool looking trees, the harsh elements have made many of them crooked and even the one in the frame has one of its branches broken.
Image captured in Nordreisa, Northern Norway.
Nikon D810, 15mm.

Thank you for the critique.
I tried to make this photo very close to as I saw it with my own eyes, so the colors are toned down quite a bit and it is not as bright.
And you are right, once you have found a place, you just need to shoot and shoot there until you get the photo you visioned and this one I went with what I saw.

And as I said, that is exactly what makes you a good artist from many more out here. People take photography so much as a resource for photoshop or as a tool to show people other art they made and because of that, we are slowly forgetting what photos were for in the first place - for showing naturality, natural beauty. Thank you for reminding me that.

Yeah, exactly, if you can pull an image that is a 4 out of 10 to a 9 out of 10 with editing, I think there is something wrong.
DonΒ΄t get me wrong though, I do like to add a bit of extra to some of my images, but only if the emotions of the moment led me in a direction where I feel it would benefit the image, often that is more adding a slight blur to the distance to give a more ethereal feel, or something as simple as clone stamping away a annoying rock.

Well I'm no radical. If a photo needs some color corrections or a bit of photoshop magic, then you might as well go for it. There's always some too bright light or too shadey shadow or that power line that totally doesn't fit in your photo. I sometimes submit my photos as raw after for example pushing brightness up or down a little bit. There's no Β harm in doing that imho. And it's also not like I'm generally against photos made 90% in photoshop. I'm just tired of those.

Yeah, I remember an image I took a while back (the fjord), since the sunset was alright and not quite there I was waiting for sunrise, during that time I spent over 2 hours picking away tall grass in the foreground to make any potential image as good as I could, would have been too much to try clean it up in PS.
Other times it can be things that is located in such a place where it would be too risky to try remove it, then there is no choice, if the composition makes it worth it.
I know that you are saying with the 90%, a guy here where I live, if he has been a a bit too lazy to go out and shot, just finds an image with some mountains and aurora and copies the sky and mountain, paste it in reverse at the bottom and just post it as a 100% perfect "reflection" shot, such is just annoying, since I know the odds of making such a shot near the ocean is extremely slim, especially if you want it perfectly sharp.

Yeah, I could do it, but I would have to step back a lot in order not to loose the two trees behind it.

Hours of standing in -14 Β°C? Are you mad? It payed off though, what an amazing image - and may I say, it's quite original imho. You did a great job at working the tree into the composition.

Thank you very much.
Yeah, it was really cold, but actually the worst part was the few seconds when I had dry off quickly and change my shirt in that cold, those few seconds shirtless was like thousands of small knives piercing the skin, but of course way better after.
That tree was the most interesting in that area, with a single broken branch and it was the only one that really complimented the aurora.

You're welcome!
To dry off from the sweat? Kind of a miracle that you warmed up again all by yourself afterwards.
Heh, I can only imagine how much time it took you to find the right tree (this one) and set up a composition. Did the aurora last that long?

I do that as soon as I get to the location I am aiming for, especially after a long walk with lots of gear.
Generally I am already very warm from the walking, so I try to change and dry off as soon as I can, always bring some paper towels and a small plastic bag where I throw the wet clothes in.
In super cold temperatures it makes it rather interesting, but it is no worse than people throwing themselves in the snow after coming out of the sauna.
The aurora was faint when I started up the mountain, but got stronger and stronger the closer I got, so towards the end I was walking really fast, managed to get the strongest aurora display, so I was happy with the effort.

Yeah but after the sauna you know you are going to be in the warm soon again.^^ I would be a little bit afraid of getting too cold and not being able to warm up again. Well, I guess it works.
Aurora photography sounds really difficult due to how fast conditions may change. This one seems to have lasted quite long and you still had to hurry at some point. You really can be happy with the outcome.

Hehe, yeah you are right about that.
Still a bit of quick walking and the warmth comes back.
Aurora photography is only difficult in the sense of getting good compositions very fast as getting it exactly where you want is more on the rare side.
Thank you again.

Many thanks.
The aurora was other-worldly, when it started I got so exited that I managed to bump my tripod on the first shot, ruining it, but pulled myself together after.

Thank you.
I kept moving left and right to get the aurora to line up behind the tree, luck was with me so that I could get it like this.
