Amnesia and severe trauma is pretty much a key feature of any Eighth Doctor series. Also is it me, or is the Time War in the EDAs much more intense and traumatic for the Doctor than the New Series one?

It's seems more of a 'Time' War than the one John Hurt had to fight. The new series Time War is a traditional lasers-and-rockets kind of war, while the book war or the war against the enemy or whatever it's called seems very amorphous and ill-defined, probably what a war fought with a time as a weapon would be like. Probably why the new series went with a more traditional war. We forget, normal people watch Doctor Who too
