My first go with scratchboard. (although my second submission, go figure!) This started out as a practice piece, but looked pretty good right off the hop, so I kept going.Wonderful ref photo from the very talented nullermanden , who takes breathtaking photos of people around the world.

I've never heard of scratchboard but it seems like something that would be rather hard to do so major kudos! This looks awesome and it's so detailed!

So scratchboard is taking off rather than adding on?

exactly! It's like a thick paper that has a black coating, and you use something akin to a caligraphy pen (minus the ink) to scratch away at that coating, revealing the white layer beneath.
It is a bit of a backwards conundrum for my poor brain.
