Neil Young - The Needle And The Damage Done

___________________________________________

I caught you knockin' at my cellar door
I love you baby can I have some more
Oh, the damage done

Song link   Lyrics link

For the most part it's the simple things in life that make our lives the happiest. But sometimes those simple things can rear right up and bite ya on the ass or worse yet, stab you in the stomach. That's what happened here. This is an X-ray photograph of my French Bulldog, Applejack's stomach with one of the aforementioned simple things in life depicted. That, which I assume was a tasty morsel for him, is a sewing needle. Yes SEWING NEEDLE! Somehow he managed to swallow it down his mouth, get it through his esophagus and finally deposit it into his stomach.

My wife was sewing back together one of his favorite squeaky toys which we named "The Hated One" because of how violently he tears it apart. She took a break, putting the "work" on the nightstand with, we assume, the needle and thread still attached to the toy and left the room. Well Applejack went up and retrieved it and then proceeded with ripping him to shreds...again. She forgot about that project and got involved in another because it's Christmas time in which there are a million and one things to do to make that happen. Around our home total chaos is putting it mildly. Anyway I noticed that he was vomiting but figured he'd eaten some grass...again. But he continued vomiting for a second day and my wife said there is something seriously wrong with him and that he should be taken to a vet immediately!

We rushed him to a 24/7 emergency vet at 3AM where they did an array of tests to determine what was the cause for his chronic vomiting. You can only imagine the look of shock and horror on our faces when the DVM took us into her lab room and showed us his X-ray on the computer screen.

She tried an endoscopic procedure first in which they pull the needle back out the way it went in but that failed because the needle was north/south and not east/west in his stomach. On top of that, to make matters worse, they discovered that it was embedded in his stomach and sticking through the stomach lining. So of course, our luck, she needed to operate immediately to cut open his belly to retrieve the needle to save his life or for us to authorize "putting him down."

Suffice it to say that nearly $5000 dollars later he is home now and recovering nicely. We do have pet insurance and they'll probably pay for about 70 percent of the cost. When you love something, or someone, material things are not so important. It's those simple little things that we do that make the biggest differences. On that note...Happy Holidays to all and make sure to take care of one another the best you can.

"Family means no one gets left behind"

Photographed with an iPhone 7. As much as I'd like to take credit for this photograph I can't because all I did was take a photo of an X-ray technician's work.

But I do consider it a collaboration of sorts because of my post editing contributions which gives it a more dramatically abstract appeal.

OMG Richard! Poor Applejack and poor you guys! I'm glad that everything work out, but what an ordeal! I had a good Christmas and and a good start to the New Year....I'm hoping nothing major as this has occurred since the start of 2020?! Yes, we must take care of every member of our family....Money no object in my eyes!. Here's to you and your and Applejack!

IKR...the Nightmare Before Christmas. But thankfully the stars shone on him and he pulled through but he still puts everything in his mouth. I have to watch him like a two year old

Money shouldn't be an object in matters of life and death but unfortunately that's the world we live in. Money talks and bullshit walks...or worse yet, dies

Thank you so much, Thea...and I wish you and all yours the happiest of new year's as well

Thank you for your concern and well wishes, Tea...always deeply appreciated

I know, it seems outrageous that medical costs for pets is so high. Just think how many animals could be saved if vets would lower their bills. I mean if I didn't have the money would they have let Applejack die when they have the ability to save his life?

Thank you so very much, Angeles

What choice do we really have other than the one I chose. When you take an animal into your home you are responsible for their well being. I did what had to be done as an owner...nothing more, nothing less.

And yes he's very happy to be home for the holidays.

A happy one to you and yours as well a
