Description "Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread."- H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror

One of the most effective things in the works of Lovecraft is the idea that there is something out there that no one knows about, but it knows about us, and it knows everything. The concept of God in a manner that can be described as an omnipotent being that knows all and sees all can be on the one hand comforting, and on the other unfathomably terrifying, but Yog-Sothoth is not horrendous, or evil or even unnatural. He IS nature, time, space, everything that there is and that will be. He is a being that personifies everything, knows everything, an eternal force of power an wisdom that no mortal or immortal being can truly fathom its everlasting impact on the multiverse. He is all, and all is him, a silent watcher that shall answer to those who wish to open the gate to the infinite, waiting in the threshold to bestow his boundless wisdom to the ones that do.

And after impregnating Lavinia Whateley he said he was going out for cigarettesΒ and never returned. What an asshole.
Hope you like it!

Just had a thought that I think you'd like spending your creativity on.

What if there was a pantheon of monstrosities... that in every way were the anti-thesis to Lovecraftian lore? Like, where Lovecraft is filled with horror type monsters, its anti-thesis, also composed of inhuman monsters, are inhuman in ways that actually are more soothing and comforting in nature?

TRXPICS In reply to Regreme [2019-04-02 10:53:39 +0000 UTC]

That could be interesting, but when I think of something that is both inhuman and soothing it will mostly be a 2D being with little to no details, but with enough human like characteristics for it to be more cute than anything else, more caricatures of the familiar things that we know of.
The best example that I can think of, ironically, is pokemon like beings XDΒ  As they are monstrous creatures that actually have a lot of soothing elements to them (big eyes, symmetrical body shapes, familiar looks to real life beings).

Ah. For me, thought it'd be more like things like soothing nature of plants or various animals or even living religious like monoliths, shaped in forms that are meant to bring about majesty or a sort of soothing to them, etc.

That... Is awesome. Like,it's a really cool concept in both idea and the execution could be amazingly diverse.

XD thanks man! I do love your insightful comments!
This design was supposed to represent,as you've said, something that is both completely chaotic in nature and appearance but also quite orderly, as Yog-Sothoth is representative of all that exists, both the chaos and the order. What I wanted to signify with the entire piece is the feeling of something that comes from a world with different laws of physics, so the upper "body" is very shapeless and broken, like oil mixed with water. But once he "steps" through the gate get changes his form into something more tangible, something that can somehow be comprehended, hence the eyes, teeth, tentacles, bones etc, but they are still unorganized enough to be unsettling at the very least.

Well, you definitely met your intention with this design. I honestly love these designs you have for the lovecraft designs. Actual clear patterns in their chaotic designs, something different than the typical amoeba like concepts that many of them tend to have.

Glad that you enjoy them man! Although I really do have a deep appreciation to the more asymmetrical and surreal designs out there, it really far more interesting to see something that actually looks like it can be alive. I mean, most of these entities have a somewhat familiar nature to them despite their completely alien appearance( Cthulhu is basically a combination of an octopus, a man and a reptile, Tsathoggua is a toad, bat monster etc.), so they can give us a vague context to what we, as human, can comprehend when facing these abominable creatures.Β
But despite that, outer gods like Yog-Sothoth can never be truly visually defined as it is supposed to represent everything that there is , so good luck with that XDΒ

Yet, you did incredibly well with Yog-Sothoth this time, eh? I think its appearance fits it very well.

Oh, maybe the hood like holes at the top could 'act' like a head, turning towards things that its central eye focuses on, while acting both as the place for sound from its body to emit and also act like nostrils, both for sniffing and for snorting out gases that could mystify those caught in its gases. Perhaps to eat, it sucks foes into there to wring and crush its victims, like how an anaconda swallows a foe whole, while 'sweating' out things that it can't digest for its mouths to crush before re-consuming the leftovers.

Just something I thought of while thinking of this.

Honestly, if you made a series of these Lovecraftian horrors, I think I may make a dedicated favorites folder for them.^^

Amazing design.^_^

Honestly, would love to see designs of the lovecraftian creatures, but in a way that is more than just amoeba like forms. Like, the known qualities of their forms constructing actual parts of a more clear, though likely asymmetrical, body form.

In a way, though it's not clear, it almost seems like it hear. Some holes over that central eye almost resemble a hood. And the diagonal mouth around the main eye in what seems like a chest there is interesting. I also like how the upper tendrils almost look like muscled shoulders in a way, though which is large and which is small among the upper four tentacles seem swapped, like its right side has a smaller tentacle higher up, while the left has the larger tentacle higher up, but still having the remaining six tentacles kinda symmetrical. Symmetrical mixed with assymetrical, fitting for something bizarre placed into the physical world. Also like how there's like fungus like eyeball sprouts sticking out of what looks like its back.

Plan to do any more lovecrafts that are more than just amoeba like bodies? Heck, for this one, would be interesting to see front and side views, since I think it would make an amazing game monster or the like if further fleshed out.
