Still not quite done, need to add actual tint to the eye (bad photoshop work is bad) and to write the text on the front. BUT, I've made progress?Related content

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the mask from?

I believe it's a black GP-5 Soviet gas mask without the filter. The "filter" on the side is a modification.

Oh dang, that looks amazing! Β The fan definitely is a needed addition, with how stuff gas masks usually get!

Velcro, actually! Β It was flexible enough to not tear the mask, though I'd assume that if you can find a flexible adhesive, it'd work just as well!

I got some to try out, what did you use for the side piece? A tuna can or?

TwoToned-Jester In reply to MyLittleNinja [2014-04-16 00:33:29 +0000 UTC]
I don't quite remember, but I do know that it was plastic, as something made of metal has the propensity to be sharp, and thus dangerous! Β Nowadays, I'd probably use worbla or wonderflex, but I'm sure a plastic container could probably work just as well.

My little brother is gonna take two tuna fish cans (smooth edges) and cut out the grate for the front piece and install a cooling fan and put the battery for the fan in the side pieceΒ
he's handy like that
that way I don't over heat in this California weather

Never mind, I read through the other comments
I actually found a black rubber GP5 mask on eBay,
it wasn't very stretchy since it's black rubber and not the white latex rubber
but after reading online (a rubber fetish site actually told me this) Armor All, it renews and protects rubber and letex.... Made it all shiny too

Yoshermon In reply to MyLittleNinja [2014-08-14 22:09:38 +0000 UTC]
Is there any special procedure you need to follow when using Armor All on the mask (or a specific kind of Armor All you need), or does simply spraying it on make the mask stretchier?

MyLittleNinja In reply to Yoshermon [2014-08-15 02:23:08 +0000 UTC]
Just wipe on then wipe off the excess
Don't forget to wear a balaclava under the mask, I got a under armor one that's for keeping cool

I don't think there were actual sizes when I bought mine, actually. It was just a one size fits all civilian mask.

Yep! Auto tint is what I got, which I picked up at a local auto store. I actually got mine for free because I needed such a small amount that the guy working there just game me some of his, herp. I can't say that that'll happen everywhere, but the boxes are about 12 dollars, and they last forever.

I'll look around online for it.
Thanks a lot! :>

It's actually an old Russian civilian gasmask that I painted black with rubberized paint. I had to modify the entire thing and work on the silver parts as well, along with having to tint the glass, so it was some work, but I didn't make the mask itself from scratch.

CuriousLuke In reply to TwoToned-Jester [2011-12-13 00:22:51 +0000 UTC]
It looks really good, although you should get the tint. Oh another thing it doesn't have any chemicals in it right?

TwoToned-Jester In reply to CuriousLuke [2011-12-13 03:28:22 +0000 UTC]
Oh I did already get the tint a long time ago, that's a very old wip picture. Used auto film cut to the exact size. The only thing that's used there is plastidip rubber paint, because the mask itself is actually grey. It flexes like I need, though I do have to touch up the high stress areas after a few wears sometimes.

Did you spray paint the mask or has it always been black when you bought it?
π: 0 β©: 1
TwoToned-Jester In reply to oblivious-life [2011-08-12 03:49:58 +0000 UTC]
It's actually sprayed black with black plastidip, which is a rubber paint that sticks fairly well to the rubber of the mask. I've had to touch up the edges a bit, since they're the most stressed areas, but it's all stayed for the most part.

How the hell did you dye a Russian GP-5?
I have to admit that the GP-5 looks a lot better than I though. Cool beans.

TwoToned-Jester In reply to CP-Highwind [2011-02-09 03:42:45 +0000 UTC]
Plastidip paint, actually. It's pretty much a spray (or paintable) rubber coating for things, so the mask itself stays flexible. It's worked pretty well, but I've noticed that some of the more stressed areas (places where it's pulled on a lot when taken on and off)tend to peel a bit. It's not difficult to fix, just a matter of cutting off the paint on those parts and respraying.
Alternatively, you can use rubber cement, naptha, and oil paint, it's just you have to mix it yourself.
Thanks!

Good luck on getting it finished!
How did you attach the side part? I've seen several people use either a staple gun or electric tape

TwoToned-Jester In reply to MystoDraws [2010-09-18 21:22:41 +0000 UTC]
Ahaha, I did get it finished finally a while ago, but I have yet to post pictures of it.
As for the side part, I actually used sticky backed velcro, because I felt it would give it the needed give for when it had to stretch over my head. It ended up working pretty well, though I need to respray part of it with plastidip because it started to bubble there.

MystoDraws In reply to TwoToned-Jester [2010-09-18 21:35:20 +0000 UTC]
Awesome, congrats
Oh, I see!!! That seems like it'd be even better to use than electric tape! That stuff can come off pretty easily.
Thanks I'm actually making a Pyro cosplay myself, so I wanted to know what the best way to attach that side part would be!

TwoToned-Jester In reply to MystoDraws [2010-09-18 22:02:11 +0000 UTC]
Why thank you!
And yeah, I looked around for a while and decided that it would probably be the best option in order to retain a lot of flexibility. Plus the side canister comes off so I can modify it if I ever need to, heh.
Good luck on your cosplay! If you ever have any questions, I can try to answer 'em, though I'm definitely not any sort of be all end all. I hope it all goes well!

Ahaha, I didn't make it from scratch no. It's an old Russian gasmask that I had to dye, modify, and create the side filter for. I wish I was that talented to make it from scratch. Heh.
