Description

The Surveyor class was first designed as a refit to the Afar class but after the designing phase was over, it was noted that design is different enough to be called its own class. These extensive changes came about to the lessons learned during the building and service of the Afars. The three Afar class frames from second batch were pulled out of mothballs and extensively rebuilt to Surveyor class specifications and given new naval construction contract numbers.

Since the class was designed to operate on 7 years before another refit, it is one of the earliest classes in Star Fleet to feature a primitive holodeck. It contained simple shapes (ie furniture, rooms), and no organic lifeforms other than grass and trees. It was comparable to early videogames centuries ago. However, most in Star Fleet Command consider this an expensive luxury feature and not appropriate on a proper Federation ship when the space and power it requires is better used for storage and other systems. It was only added after heavy pressure from Captains and others in Star Fleet that it was field tested on the Surveyor Class.

Another feature the class field tested is the Diplomat’s Shuttle. As the federation grew larger in size, so did the number of first contacts. A larger, more eloquent shuttle was needed to facilitate these meetings. These shuttles quickly gained the unofficial name of “Captain Yachts” by the crew because of how often it was the captain, not a diplomat, that would make first contact. Later, the name became official as it was noted by SF Command. The shuttle bay for the Diplomat’s Shuttle is located behind the bridge.

Seen here is the first vessel of the Surveyor Class, the USS Surveyor, NCC-4700.

You use a particular program to make these?
Or do you do it all by hand?

For this design, most of it was done by hand but some of the parts came from CaptShade and Kavinveldar. I use Window's Paint for most of the hand drawn stuff and Artweaver to clean it up.

I'm more use to paint than to Artweaver or Photoshop. Its also easier to do pixel artwork on it than Artweaver. *shrugs*

Paint is a hard program to do good with.
It really shows.
