Based of a what-if question that popped into my mind. What if the US never finished the atomic bomb, and ended up fighting on the Japanese Home Islands? What if the Soviets invaded Hokkaido? What sort of weapons would be used in this final battle?
With the help of German weapon-makers in Japan, the Imperial Army introduced the Type 20 SMG and the Type 21 Assault Rifle before the onset of the Allied invasion. The Type 21's round, the 7.7x35mm Arisaka, is a shortened version of the 7.7x58mm Arisaka used in the Type 99 rifle ( [link] ). The Type 20 uses the 8x22mm Nambu ([link] ) round used in Type 100 SMG ([link] ). Due to the weak stopping power of the Nambu round, the Type 20 compensates with low recoil, a fifty round, high capacity magazine and a rate of fire of 1000 rpm. Invented to help arm the Home Guards as the Allies advance. While the numbers of Type 21's are low (yet significantly higher then the Type 15), encountered does happen every now and then, as the main forces still use their weapons left over from earlier in the war. The Type 20 is issued far more then both of the assault rifles put together.
The Type 15, Type 20, and Type 21 were used heavily by both the People’s Republic of Japan and the State of Japan after WWII in the Japan War (1951-1952). When the Japanese Defense Forces (South Japan) attacked the North’s capital of Yamagata, most of the soldiers on both sides used these weapons, along with many other weapons left over from Imperial Japan. North Japan used these weapons to retake Yamagata and invade the Ibaraki Prefecture. Since the end of the Japan War, both sided have replaced these weapons, however most paramilitary forces and riot police still have many weapons ready to be used. Many Type 20 SMGs have been converted to use the 9x19mm Parabellum round. These have been designated the Type 20L. Many Type 20L's were sold to Iraq during the Iraq-Syrian War (1980-1989). Many Type 20's and Type 21's were also donated by South Japan to the mujaheddin in Afghanistan (1979-1989).
