...they don't eat mice. They eat fish, frogs and worms. They don't bite often, and only if the want to defent themselves, or if they mistake your hands for food. If you tame them well they will almost never bite you, and they actually make great pets!

Not to mention, if they do bite I doubt it would hurt much.  I've never been bitten by a garter snake but I've had an adult ball python cling to my hand.  It hurt a little, but it's really not that awful.

Cool. I really want one, but I'm not allowed to have one cause my mom doesn't want any meat-eating animal. I tought she wouldn't find fish so bad, but i was wrong. I will get an crested gecko soon tho.

I'm guessing she doesn't like cats then.  Even cats who are fed kibble will hunt and occasionally eat other animals.

She doesn't hate cat's, but she's more of a dog person, and yeah she'd probably not like animals bringing her dead animals

Yeah.  Dog's don't bring you dead birds I guess.  Though they do have the ability to kill ya if they're not small dogs.  Personally, I love all animals (pet-wise) and when it comes to wild ones, I prefer most animals that aren't apes and monkeys ;v;

Garter snakes are rat snakes (I think... ),all of them are nom-venomous! ^-^

But if you do get bit by any kind of rat snake... WASH IT OUT,IMMEDIATELY!!! Their mouths gather bateria from the animals they eat,and it CAN infect the wound!

That's probably just some people.  They do make a weird smell if they feel threatened, so it might be that as well.

It's not painful at all if it's that small.  There's garter snakes where I live and the adults are actually a bit larger, but their bites only sting a little so this one hardly does anything.

A lot of snakes actually have really thin needle teeth, so you can bleed a bit more than you think from such a small amount of pain.  I've had garters and a python bite me (the garters were wild and felt threatened and my hand smelled like the rat I was feeding my python), so I'm being honest here.

Only venomous snakes have fangs, of which garter snakes are not. However they do have four rows of teeth on the top palate

I have two cats and over 100 snakes. Mine are socialized with snakes, but you may need a strong container or a separate room for your snake. If you want small and easily available, corn snakes, milk snakes, king snakes and other colubrids are a good way to go!
