Description
reminded me of Rhyperior's existence, so I quickly whipped up a design for it too.I never really liked Rhyperior, I think it has an ugly head and body, so i tried to remedy that a little.
I have no clue about my level of success, but we shall see.
Rhyperior are probably used as artillery units. While the lesser evolutions supply the titans with rocks, they shoot them into the enemy lines. Rhyperiors are probably also smarter and braver than its prevolutions, and responds to things it doesnt understand with aggression rather than fear.

You should def. explore that idea, I can't guarantee I'll do anything remotely interesting. ;u;
But yeah that's a really neat concept, esp. if you start extrapolating to pokemon that don't have trade evolutions.
(also I think you might get a kick out of this person's pokemon crossbreeds: extra-vertebrae.tumblr.com/tag⦠)

Oh my god, thank you. That is perfect. Those crossbreeds make me sick is all the right ways. I get tired of my own designs so easily which is why I wanted someone else to try my concept.Β

Oh yeah, it's really great to look at other peoples' designs and ideas for them. :3
Here's a more recent rhyperior I've done, this time attempting to stick closer to the official design but still make it more appealing for myself. (not related to your suggested idea of combining objects with pokemon to create new horrors)

I actually like your original design more. The small details of the beak suggests a similar evolutionary history with Ceratopsians. The way it holds itself is indicative of a transitional form, departing from quadruped to biped. The folds of skin give it dept and texture. All you need to do is alter the pallet.Β

umbbe In reply to Raptorzesty [2016-04-06 23:07:25 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the two designs have fairly different motivations. The one featured here was more "how can I interpret the details of these creatures with real animal traits?" and the other one was "how can I change the shapes of this creature so it appeals more to me, but also doesnt add anything too strange"
The beak also aligns it more closely with the designs of the previous evolutions ( umbbe.deviantart.com/art/Rhyho⦠)
There's the curse, I do typically try to go for kind of realistic/biology-influenced, but I get frustated because it loses 'something' that exists in canon pokemon. No idea what that 'something' is. Perhaps the fact that pokemon probably shouldn't look like they evolved from real animals to me. esp. considering how pokemon world had 'normal' animals that went extinct, I guess?
Eh sorry I'm rambling.
I could probably redraw the designs with perhaps some adjustments from what i've learned about anatomy, some day...

Maybe- these are somewhat old so there's really no guarantee how much my style resembles this anymore, but I suppose.
Can never trust me to do stuffs tho. :c

Rhyperior usually looks like a retarded rhydon on steroids, but yours look better.
The way you made it semi-quadrupedal is a nice addition, it makes it more original. Same goes for the beak.

umbbe In reply to AlphaXXI [2012-12-15 15:40:23 +0000 UTC]
Thank you~
The beak is mainly to retain consistency with the rhyhorn and rhydon who are based on the ceratops-style family. Im glad that it's an improvement, though!

I agree, I don't like the Phyperior and sometimes I wonder why the Pokemon designers bothered to continue to evolution of Rhydon. But, you did a very good job on this, and kinda convinced me to look at them better.

umbbe In reply to Elaeva [2012-04-24 07:21:35 +0000 UTC]
I guess they felt it needed an upgrade in power. Rhydon does seem a little weak gamewise.
Im glad you like it! One of my goals when playing the heart gold (which inspired me to start this) game was to give every pokemon a chance - hopefully can do the same with designing them as well.

Elaeva In reply to umbbe [2012-04-24 07:30:32 +0000 UTC]
Good point, Rhydon does seem like a simple design and Pokemon compared to the first evolution though I have never trained one before so I would not know.
And your welcome c: you are a very good artist and as I said you convinced me to look at the Rhyperior in a different view and also you did the same with the Bastiodon, I'm a realistic Pokemon artist myself, so thankyou for the inspiration, you do a brilliant job at it!

I have been training a rhyhorn but I haven't got it to evolve to rhydon yet. It shall happen!
Sadly rhyhorn's moves are fairly boring - mostly rock and normal type moves. BV Bah!
Thanks and no problem~!

Yes, I have checked serebii on several occasions and do remember when it evolves...
However, I have a ton of other pokemon to level to lv 50, so it takes a longer time.

Yeah I see what you mean. I kinda like it when people draw Charizard or Bowser as fat but still muscular. They look kinda charming and funny but still strong and formidable. Like the way you imagine them being.

umbbe In reply to Jblask [2012-02-25 10:37:09 +0000 UTC]
For me they make the species cuter and more relatable in some weird way. ! Perhaps because the fat belly smooths their figure -> simpler -> cuter
Strange things like that.

Jblask In reply to umbbe [2012-03-04 07:56:31 +0000 UTC]
that makes sense too. Probably why we find baby versions of characters so cute.
π: 0 β©: 1
umbbe In reply to Jblask [2012-03-04 10:38:22 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, plus baby-versions have specific anatomical traits that make us find them more adorable.
For me that mechanic is sadly broken since I rarely do find a purely babylike character (like most characters in cartoons etc) even remotely cute.
Though cats will forever remain adorablest.
Jblask In reply to umbbe [2012-03-10 04:40:07 +0000 UTC]
Yeah.
Broken? How do you mean?
Not a big cat fan... met waaay to many ornery cats.D:

umbbe In reply to Jblask [2012-03-10 11:10:34 +0000 UTC]
As in, it should make the character cute/endearing, but for me most of the time it doesn't. Dont like babies either. Madness...
Aww, you should meet our cats then. <:V Little kitty is the sweetest thing, she will never bite or scratch even when she is angry (she just lightly touches with teeth when she is unhappy about her treatment), especially not strangers. Big kitty hasn't scratched any strangers either, and he likes being petted any which way.

Jblask In reply to umbbe [2012-03-13 02:40:31 +0000 UTC]
Ah... i'm not good at making things cute either... so I'm not really sure what to look for. And lots of things I find cute others don't.
Oh that sounds nice. one of my other DA friends has cats that she says are really nice. Our last cat was just terrible. Was cute when he was little but when he got older I kidna wanted to just punt him to the moon.
Got another cat. I don't see her much because she's always in my youngest sister's room. But she likes roaming the house and hiding. She seems okay though. Eccept for her random yowling.

umbbe In reply to Jblask [2012-03-13 06:40:49 +0000 UTC]
'Tis a more common thing than one might guess, perhaps.
Aw, was he aggressive? Or just annoying? Our older cat's mother was sort of unbalanced (she hissed and scratched and in general seemed sort of crazy) but I disciplined big kitty at times when he scratched us. It's sort of mean to tell cats how they should behave, but I think he enjoys being gentle more than scratching for fun.
Have you neutered the cat? Could be that she is occasionally in heat. In general it's smart to neuter since it helps reduce cat overpopulation and the female has a longer lifespan (giving birth/getting pregnant is very taxing on a cat, and there are a lot of diseases that an unneutered cat can get if I remember right)

Yeah, that pokemon is a lot of fail. But this version of it is great!
I haven't played much of the newer games.... Is this a fourth evolution, or one of those trade/special circumstances ones?
π: 0 β©: 1
umbbe In reply to MistingWolf [2012-02-10 05:58:48 +0000 UTC]
It's a third evolution for Rhydon, you get it by trading it with armor equipped. !
Pokemon has thankfully not jumped the shark with evolutions, and kept them to three at max. (if they started breaking that rule, the series might be going downhill, depending on how they deal with it)
