Actually when I think about it, red just means bloodflow. When blood flows to a certain area it says a lot about the emotions of the scene. It doesn't even have to be on a character. When you're angry blood flows to your fists, when you're horny blood flows to your genitals. And since we're wired to emphasize with blood, it's only natural for us the scene itself will have blood flow in it too.
