What do you mean "there isn't canon"? There's been an official comic going on for THREE YEARS. I would know, because I'm the art director for it.
Mario doesn't have a glowing eye. Or track shorts. Because the official comic SAID so. The only reason he has a glowing eye in fanart, is because most of the people who make fanart don't bother to try looking for the official material. Like you.
