The vampires in this world are still affected by those old time things like garlic, crosses, and holy water.
For crosses, it is generally VERY painful to be in the presence of them.
Magnus, however, is the oldest, and therefore strongest, of the vampires alive in the world. (Alive used very loosely here XD)
So the crosses don't affect him as strongly as it would others.
Basically, he's boasting to - and warning - all other vampires that he can wear a cross and still function with it in his vicinity, which is a testimony to his power.

Similiarly to how some warrior societies of the South Pacific would have their genatalia pierced and wear full body tattoos which were painfully chiseled into their skin.
