Here's my own Ref vs. no Ref meme~My reference: Zen's sexy face
Original meme:

It's crazy to compare them side by side... The left was done in pencil, the right in fine-point Sharpie.

Honestly, there are things I like about your "without reference" that I like better. Well done on both!

Thanks! The second one has more of my own style, to be sure... Do you mind elaborating on what you found better about it? I'm curious (and knowing what looks good and what doesn't is part of growing as an artist).

Of course!
The first one--it's fairly obvious that it was drawn directly from a reference. The shading also is something of an indication, as it's reproducing block tone shading with pencil (not a bad thing--just something I noticed ) All in all it's a fairly standard (but well done) bit of art of someone else's character, if that makes sense.
The second one feels much more personal to me. I know part of that at least is coming from the position of the eyes--pointed AT the reader rather than looking beyond him or her. I am also always much more drawn to the strong inked line than the pencil line, so that's probably part of it too.
I prefer the shape of the eyes in your second drawing much over the first. They seem much more realistic and expressive to me. Your treatment of the nose in the second one is interesting too--just enough to be there, but offering nothing more than a hint to the shape and character of it.
In some ways the hair feels more natural to me too. The first one has flippy sort of classic tousles handsome-man hair, while the second looks just like the semi-curly hair some of my guy friends have.
Overall, I guess, it's just the impression each gave me which left me feeling that way--I dunno if I've dissected it well enough to make it make sense!

Thank you! I understand what you mean. I personally think a lot more of myself is in the second one, because the original piece got warped by my mind's eye. Not in a bad way at all, just different. The nose shape you mentioned is actually nearly identical to the original if there wasn't any shading, but the shading makes it look more complicated than it is. I really liked the simplicity of it, and so I remembered it in the second drawing. And I was really surprised how much of the general shape and position of the hair strands I remembered (though I had started out the second drawing too close to the left side of the paper and couldn't do the left side of his head). I really like drawing hair.
Thanks so much for elaborating, I really appreciate it~

Yeah. Actually, ultra fine-point to be exact. The black areas were filled in solid with a slightly bigger Sharpie.
